    Mark,

That's one fine looking engine! You have the most orange paint on the exhaust manifolds and bell housing that I have seen. Do you mind sharing your rationale with us?

      Rich,

The interior of my garage is under construction. It is a 18 ' x 18 ' detached garage with a hip roof. It's 12 ' to the peak of the ceiling. I've been struggling to fit a lift in there, because I'm limited height wise and depth wise. I can't modify the exterior, so I'm doing the best I can with what I've got. My point is that I would recommend going with a 12 ' high flat ceiling. That way you can add more lifts later, as you get more cars or your needs change. I would love to be greedy and have both a two post and a four post lift, since each has it's advantages. 22 ' doesn't seem very deep. You probably should go at least 25 '. If I had a blank sheet of paper, I think I would go 40 ' x 60 '. That's my two cents worth.

        Joe,

Maybe I'll start a thread on engine painting. I don't want to hijack Rich's thread.

I have a 4 post lift in a 12 foot ceiling metal building. 30x40. Only thing is I wish I put in an inside sink(outdoors now) and a place to pee-pee. Wife sometime has to remind me not to mark up the house plumbing. If possible go with 150-200 amp service for welder, air comp, refrig and jam box....good luck with your project...........P..

I built a shop back in 2006. I had retired and needed something to keep me busy. I restored a couple of muscle cars for myself and soon other folks were asking for some help. I have a little low profile business fooling with one or two cars at a time. The shop is 54x31x12 and has all of the features: lift, bead blaster, big IR air compressor with 7 drops, etc. I insulated the building real well and it has central air and heat. I am too cheap to run the a/c but use the heat. i am having a big time. I used garagejournal.com a great deal during the planning/build stage. Here are a few pictures (the place is pretty messy right now).IMG_3961.jpgIMG_3962.jpgIMG_3960.jpg

My garage I had built is 28' X 28' 9' X 16' door with a steel entry door. On the right half the ceiling is vaulted 20' at the peak with a 2 post lift installed the left is at 10' ceiling with storage above access is a pull down stairs that is to the vaulted side of the storage area. Built a 4' X 8" power room with Electrical Panel 150 Amp service , Air Compressor and a water heater that supplies the radiant floor heating system. Here are some photos of the garage.

great looking shop you have Paul and everyone else. i hope you can make it to my place in june Paul. thanks for the great tutoring at this past weekends judging school. i learned alot.
here is a pic of my detail shop. you can never have enough power outlets and lights. i also place the aircompressor in a side room. that made it real nice not to deal with the noise. i have the air hose on a reel in that same room then coming through a hole in the wall. i also have a low rise lift that comes in handy.

                take care,
                matt

Thanks for the accolades but most of what I have learned has come from senior judges when I was new. I am just passing it on to the next generation of judges plus I am still learning every time I judge.

Also for my compressor I plumbed PVC high pressure tubing with multiple connections through out the shop and one out side at the garage door has worked with no problems since 2002. With the compressor in the closed room really make a huge noise reduction. Lighting are 5 8' 2 bulb high output fluorescent on the left side 1 8' 2 bulb over the work bench 2 8' 2 bulb on the right with 1 HSP white at the peak 3 separately switched. Then 8 120v outlets 4 at each position and 5 240v outlets.

That is one fine lookin 66! Can you share any info about your lift? Manufacturer and part number? How high does it go? And how do you like it? I may be forced into something like that due to ceiling height limitations.

thanks Joe. the lift is a bend pac. it is at full lift in the picture. probably 3 feet at most. it works out great for e when i buff sides of cars. it does have some interference issues when you want to work under the car though like the lifting cylinder. but you can work under the engine and most of the rear. i hope this helps.
how high is your ceiling Joe? is it out of the question for a 4 post lift?

Sorry there's no Corvette in the picture, but I was working on something else the day I took these pictures. The '61 is in another building. This garage was built in 1984, 24x32, with two storage bays and one work area. Probably the best feature is the "root cellar" in the work area, since at that time I just couldn't get comfortable with the idea of an electric lift and many of the cars I work on don't have conventional frames to mate up with point lifts. It is very nice to be able to walk away from a project and not have to worry about something falling if it is already on the ground. Heat is electric which does fine until the ambient drops below 20F, then it just can't keep up. Air is from a compressor located in a corner and there are many electrical outlets on different circuits along with ample lighting. In retrospect, if I were doing it again, the electric is probably the only thing I wouldn't change. For the future: 1) Bigger - things take much more space when apart than when together; 2) Larger capacity heating system, probably oil fired, to cope with the colder days; 3) Compressor in separate room or enclosure to cut down on noise; and 4) Probably would go with a lift since going down and up the ladder to the root cellar seems to be more of a task as I get older. Overall, I'm very pleased with what I've got. It has allowed many projects to be completed that would not have been otherwise possible (engine swaps are very easy) and the mess is all mine. I really do know where everything is. Now to move the boat that is blocking the view out the window.

                          Matt,

The garage is 18 ' x 18 '. I call it the worlds' smallest two car garage. It has a hip roof, it's 12 ' to the peak, but much less on the sides. A four post will squeeze in without the approach ramps. The driveway is pretty steep coming down to the garage. I'm a little paranoid, I don't really want to park the car on the street, walk down to the garage, open the door, put the ramps on, then put the car on the lift. I'm still processing my options. I've been working with Mark Tulley on this.

edward, no need to appologize for not having a corvette in the pic. i dont think you'll have anyone complaining about looking at a gullwing. beautiful. my brother had the same garage pit in his 1st house. it was like having another room to store parts.
