1959 Pad Stamping / VIN Derivitive help needed

    IMG_5998.jpgHello all,

I have a question regarding the engine PAD stamping on my 59 Vette. Let me first say that I had the car judged today at Tony's Corvette Shop in Gaithersburg, Maryland and received a solid Top Flight award at 98.6. I am thrilled. What a great experience!
The judges did however spend a great deal of time looking at the PAD stamping which does not have the VIN derivitive stamp (VD). They originally thought it should. Numbers pertinant to the car are:

    Engine Casting # 3756519
Engine block cast date: K-28 (Nov 28, 1958)
Engine assembly date: F-I2-0I CQ (Dec 1st, 1958 only 3 days after cast date)
Automobile assembly date for VIN J59S103807: 1/27/59

According to the Judging Manual page 47, VD's were added to the engine pad around mid December 1958 approx VIN 1800. My VIN is 3807 (about 5 or 6 weeks later) and does not have the VD stamping. I've read the VIN Derivitive Stamping section (p-47) a hundred times and still don't get it.

There is absolutely no question that my motor is original to the car given it's history. The judges finally figured it out and didn't deduct anything but I don't get it yet. Can someone assure me that this car SHOULDN'T have the VD? My contention is because the engine was assembled on Dec 1st, 1958, two weeks prior to mid December when they started adding the VD's that mine shouldn't have it. I'm confused. Please help.
    Thanks
    Wayne

I thought the VIN stamps came out in Dec '59, (not '58?)

No offense but I hope these weren't NCRS judges. It's printed clearly in the judging Guide. The VIN stampings began in Dec. 59 with approx. VIN #1800 of the 1960 model year. Yours is correct.

Sorry, but K28 =s Nov 2, 1958. Unless we have a typo, waiting around for a month for assembly is somewhat long.

Yes...they were NCRS judges. It was a chapter event. I must admit, I was confused when it was brought up but they did get it straight. The way you put it is clearer than the manual.
            Many thanks

              p. 47 Quote: "Summarizing: 1958-60 approximately VIN #`1800 no VIN stamping: 1960 approximately VIN #1801 to approximately ......................" Seems clear to me from that, that it began the middle of December '59.

                Got it....Thanks.
I was incorrectly using ser # 1801 in model year 1959 instead of model year 1960.
Thanks for the clairification to all who responded.

My reply above may have offended some NCRS judges so I'm making a public apology. I wasn't aware that sometimes judges are asked to help out on cars they aren't familiar with, so they have to rely on the Judging Guide for their info. That source can be confusing and sometimes just plain wrong. My apologies to any that took offense to my statement. That wasn't the intent of my comment.

Wayne, One of the biggest issues with sponsoring a chapter meet is getting judges. Now members will attend judging seminars in vast numbers but when it comes time for them to help out at a little chapter show they are MIA.
Therefore you get guys to judge a car or class that are not familiar with it. Luckily our Pittsburgh Tri-State chapter has a bunch of great guys and we also get help from surounding chapters when we put on a chapter show. MDZ06 has shown up often (good judges are hard to get so you have to take WTF shows up LOL)
The Lake Erie Chapter and MAC chapter guys always come to our chapter shows. They know they won't go home hungry either.

Register your Corvette for the PA Regional in Altoona Sept 6-8. Flyer in "The Driveline". First class huge building that will hold 100 plus Corvettes with no problem. All classes no matter what will be under roof.
Hurry though as some classes already starting to fill up.
Our own VH crosskeystv aka Bill Bryan is the chairman of the show.
Huge 1st class welcoming party on Thursday night with entertainment. Be there. CFIA
