Brake fluid- Silicone vs Standard

Is there a way of distinguishing which type of fluid (silicone vs standard) is in the system on a used vehicle?

Put some oil in a cup. and a few drops of water. The water will come to the top with silicone fluid. Dot 3 or 4 the water will mix.

Most of the silicone DOT 5 stuff is purple.

True Gene but only when it is new. It changes color with use.

That is true Russ, but takes a few years, hope he didn't let it go that long..........
