Gentlemen,
Need a little help
Just started my front end rebuild on my 66. Now that the control arm shafts are removed my mechanic has discovered a problem. The holes for the camber adjusting bolts have enlarged to such a degree that the spline on the camber bolts won't keep the bolt from turning. This is on both sides (all 4 holes). I am referring to the bolts that pass thru the upper control arm shafts
IIRC these bolts (LIC item 49-08) must be captive in the frame or it will be difficult to insert shims for the alignment. I had prepurchased new camber bolts (along with other anticipated hardware) from LIC and same issue, the holes have worn sufficiently that the spline under the head of the camber bolt will not grip the hole. I knew I had the problem with one bolt and was hoping the spline was damaged and not the hole but the splines do not appear to be damaged on the old bolts.
I am guessing this is a common GM design and this problem has occurred before and wonder what the fix is.
Randy
