    1954 Generator Installation

I need a little help on the correct mounting of the generator on my 1954 Corvette. Before painting the engine I am "test fitting"everything but I cannot seem to determine how the generator fits onto the mounting bracket on the block. The generator is the correct dated generator - I purchased a new mounting bracket because the one that came with the car I thought was not correct. Here is a photo of the new bracket with my generator. Now the ears of the generator will not fit between the legs of the bracket. Almost 1/4" too small so this is the best arrangement that I can come up with which places the pulley maybe 1/4" out of alignment with the fan and balancer which may be ok since I could elongage the mounting holes or slot in the bracket. As you can see though there is a gap of between the ear of the generator and the leg of the bracket. The photo should give you an idea as to what my delima is.

any help to get me back on track would be appreicated.
    Thanks,
    John Lanning

      Well here are my dimensions....
For the bracket - the inside clear dimension is 6-1/2" clear, outside to outside is 7-1/8".
The Generator - the outside of ear to outside of ear is 6-7/8" - inside between ears is approximatle 6-1/8". My generator is #1100018 if that helps.

Well Guy you may be correct .... the bracket that I had orgionally came with my 1954 truck engine and did not fit. Then low and behold I order a replacment from a Corvette supplier and I got exactly the same bracket. At least it is a small component and will not hold up my progress but I need to be on the lookout for a correct one.

          thanks for the advice!

            Re: 1954 Generator Installation

Well I have been away from my restoration work on the 54 for a while and trying to get back into this after my father passed away. I have one of those nagging questions that is a real pesky one regarding the correct lower generator mounting bracket.... I have a Delco generator 1100018 that has the distance between the inside of the mounting ears of 6-1/8" or 7" outside to outside.

            1) would like a clearification on the proper mounting of the generator to lower bracket. Do the mounting ears of the generator sit between the ears of the lower generator bracket or do they straddle the outside (the lower bracket sits between the generator ears)?
            2) What is the clear outside dimension of the bracket or a dimension between the ears would be helpful i my attempting to find the correct one. Having a real problem getting one. I have ordered 2 brackets from suppliers and both do not fit but are the same so I am wondering if there is something fishy about the generator I have or just bad luck here..
            Thanks,
            John

first - sorry to hear about your father.

              1. the gen sits on the outside of both ends of the bracket

Call Carol at Grossmuellers - she has the correct ones - I cant remember the part number - I might have a pic of mine.

                Re: 1954 Generator Installation

Thanks Chris for your condolence....dad and I had been working together on the car for a while and hoped to finish it together but guess we missed it.

The bracket in the initial photo post was the one I purchased from Carol which you can see does not appear correct based on the generator I had so I thought I would first make sure I knew of the correct mounting of the gen in relation to the bracke (thanks for confirming). Just need to confirm the dimensions on the generator ears to make sure that my gen is correct and then will call Carol again. They are great folks to work with and I am sure she will help.

The JM calls for an 1102793 generator for 53-55 6-volt applications. Looks like approx 8 inches outside to outside mounting measurement on generator.

Daves right - generator is not the correct one
Also should have a black ID tag with the PN and date code
and have a 5 inch pulley
                    Bracket is prob correct

Got a pic of the generator, but not of the lower bracket.
