    67 TC stall speed HELP!!!!

What should be the correct stall speed for a base engine 327-300 powerglide torque converter with either a 322 or 308 can't remember which, but is not posi rear end. All I seem to be able to locate is 2000RPM or greater. Also was the flex plate balanced with lead weight in little holes or did it depend on the internal engine balancing? MANY THANKS!!!

It might be in the AMA specs. Have you checked?

OE converters on mild engine configurations typically have a stall speed in the 1800-2000 range. You can check yours by applying the brake hard, flooring the throttle for a few seconds and reading the tach.

        Al -

The flexplate was neutral-balanced by itself prior to installation at the engine plant.

1st, Thanks John, that is what I thought by looking at mine. 2nd , Duke, at the risk of sounding like a DA, I'm not sure where to or how to check the AMA specs. All sources, I questioned said that the 2000 stall was the lowest tc they could get. Iwanted to make sure this would pass PV and the ultimate test---my wife driving the car without having to give a lot of gas to get it going forward. In your experience, will a 2000 work at or near original driving charactistics ( however you spell it) Thanks

Google GM Heritage and download the '66 Corvette vehicle information package. I started a thread on the subject in the last week or so.

Like I said 1800-2000 is the typical OE converter stall speed range for a mildly tuned OE engine.

Run the test I previously recommended. What do you read on the tach as the stall speed?

I checked out my copy of the 1967 AMA Specifications for the Corvette. On page 16-POWER TRAINS it shows the Powerglide stall speed as 1730 RPM for the base 327 engine, and 2220 RPM for the L36 (390 HP) and L68 (400 HP) 427 engines.

The torque converter is shown as 11.75 inches nominal diameter for all applications. The stall torque ratio is shown as 2.10 to 1.

Al: As Duke says, lots of EXCELLENT info in this document. Make sure to get yourself a copy from GM Heritage Center.

Duke, I should have mentioned on my reply back to you that the engine and trans. are out of the car as I'm trying to finish up a restoration that started back in 93 and was put on hold for 18 years. I'm in the process of getting everything back from the rebuilders and about ready to re-install the eng & trans. Unless someone can steer me in the direction of locating a correct TC, I'll guess I'll have to vfgo with a 2000RPM one and hope for the best
