    62 War/Hot Idle Problem

I have a newly restored 62 FI. Everything including the engine, FI unit, distributor, etc. were correctly rebuilt by respected NCRS members and suppliers. The car has only been driven about 20 miles. The car starts and runs fine when cold. In situations where the engine gets warm, is shut down, and restarted within a short time it runs very rough and will not idle. I can keep the car running only by feathering the accelerator, but as soon as you release the accelerator the car stalls. I've pulled the FI unit and tested it on another car and it does fine under all conditions. I have drained the gas tank and installed 110 octane racing fuel. I have also changed the coil. The car also has new date coded wiring from Corvette Central installed which based upon what I have read on the forum could be part of the problem. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Leo,
Difficult to diagnose since everything was new.
Try running a carb on the engine and see what it does.
Many of the FI guys test run thier rebuilds prior to returning to the owner, was your test run?
Did you properly break or run-in the engine? Did you do it with the fuel unit?

Thanks Bruce. Fi was run for over 100 miles after being rebuilt. The engine was run-in with the FI unit.

        Leo,
Hopefully some of the FI knowledgable members can give us some good info.

If it runs fine on another car then I would start looking elsewhere in the electrical side of your car. Does a FI have a ballast resister on the firewall? What about condensor in the distributor? After it is started does it act up after it gets warm or only after you stop and restart? Have you checked operating temps with a RF gun? Does it ever run ok after you restart and feather the throttle?

The condenser in the distributor appears to have been the problem. Since changing the condenser the dwell and timing have been checked and so far the car is running as it should.

Thanks to all for the advice.

When the gauge is indicating 180, my IR gun at the radiator shows 172-175. Subjectively, there is a lot of heat coming off the engine, much more than I perceive coming from the engine of my '60. going forward, I'd be inclined to bring the temperature down 10 - 15 degrees.

That said, the engine now sounds very good and feels like would love to give you whiplash.

Leo. Here is something else to watch out for on your 62. Be careful the fuel line from the engine fuel pump to the fuel filter isn't too close to the valve cover.
If you have an original line you shouldn't have this problem.
I have found out that a lot of the 58 to 62 FI cars are suffering from the gas boiling "before" it even gets to the fuel bowl., If you have a repro line massage it and if necessary insulate it. If you are not showing the car pitch the 4 individual leg gaskets and install the 57 to 59 style which is the one piece base gasket. It's about 1/8" thick and covers the entire bottom of the FI unit.
NOS Delco Remy points are not the answer. With the cardboard/fiber end to them they take on moisture and fail. NAPA has a nice condenser made by Standard. But you already know this.
Don't want to talk about ethanol as it's been beaten to death on this forum. John
