    67 l-79 dipstick finish

This is a heads up for those that don't check the CF. It seems now that both crome & natural finish will be excepted as correct per John Z. for dipsticks.

    Re: 67 l-79 dipstick finish

    Thanks for the heads-up Ken.

Mine is natural, both tube and dipstick handle, although the handle may have been painted black at some point. Original L79 engine, car has been in the family in 1976, was built Jan. 11, 1967. Dipstick has correct shaped handle, skirt, black plastic handle plug-tip and markings at the end of the blade.

I realize the dipstick handle was chrome for the 1966 L79 (66JG, p. 129), along with the carb-to-fuel pump and vacuum advance lines if I remember correctly, but my understanding has been that all these items were natural finish for the L79 in 1967.

If you check the CF thread most people said the same thing that theirs was natural also.

I confess that I probably started the reversal of the upcoming 67 JM's chrome requirement for 350HP cars. When I read John Z's post on the CF I sent the national team leader a bunch of pictures of dipsticks on 67 350 HP cars with VIN No's (Bowtie, Flight, regular street cars) with all showing a natural finish....except one. I have had a zillion 67 350 hp cars including two originals right now and never have I had one with a chrome dipstick. For the JM to show only chrome would have been another travesty in the judging manual that would have taken years to get changed. I truly think the factory spec was for a natural dip stick, but there could be some left over chrome ones from prior years that got used. Better to have the JM say both acceptable than chrome only. For what it is worth, I have many pictures of 66 350 hp motors too showing a mixture of chrome and natural dipsticks. Let's remember, the 65 high-horse 327's were the last year of the nice dressed motor with chrome....dip stick, air cleaner base, gas line, vac advance line, choke tube, fuel filter holder, etc. Beginning in 66, it appears GM wanted cost savings. Thus why I love the 65 350 and 365 motors!

I am with you. Never saw a chrome one on any of the original 67'S I had/sold.
