    Re: '69 Gas Cap Gasket

    Hi Floyd,

    I have a July 16 1969 build L68 which has a cap similar to the third in line picture, in David's post, and mine has a rubber gasket.Hope this helps.
    Cheers

      David;

      I am aware of the designs and how they work, but I wasn't sure when they changed them in production. Mine is a July 9, 63 build it I have owned it since new. The original cap is a single vent hole type, and I was led to believe that it remained that way until at least the C-3 series. When I ordered the vent/vacuum valve equipped cap a few years back, I was told by the dealer parts department that it was for a 69, but now listed also as the replacement for a 63. I'll defer to Joe's knowledge on this too as he states it came in late 63 - I'd say real late.

        Thanx for the reply Grahame. Does your cap have the SMC logo stamped into the the bottom side?

          Stu,

          The "early" 1963 cap (GM # 3820865) was replaced with GM # 3843576 on 2/22/63 as per the 1963 AIM. The 2/22/63 date was the day of the revision on the actual drawing not the day of change on the assembly line. Apparently they continued to issue the cap on the 1963 assembly line until at least July 9, 1963, and possibly to the end of the 1963 production until all the 3820865 caps were gone. According to Chevrolet Parts History the change from 3820865 to 3843576 took place on March 1964 for caps sold over the counter. The 3843576 cap has the vent/vacuum valve.
          GM # 3843576 was replaced with GM # 3921689 on 8/8/67 (as best as I can read in the 1968 AIM) and July 1968 as per Chevrolet Parts History. GM # 3921689 was replaced with GM # 3952708 in May 1969 as per Chevrolet Parts History. The 1969 AIM lists 3952708 as the gas cap. If you bought a cap for your 1963 sometime after May 1969 you would have bought a 3952708 cap unless the dealer still had some 3820865, 3843576, or 3921689 gas caps on their shelves.

            David;

            Thanks for the information. I'll defer to your part numbers as I don't have a ready reference and am not too involved with historical data. I did that for too many years working for the GM Locomotive division, and at my age I need to keep my head clear just to take my meds on time. The cap I ordered a few years back through the dealer came from the parts warehouse, I believe they said in Atlanta. It was at a time I was doing everything I could to reduce the gas smell in my attached garage in order to keep peace in the family. Every little thing I did seemed to help some, but the biggest difference came when I found a source for non-ethanol gas.

            Thanks again for clearing that up, and adding to my concern for the cap features (other than just the gasket) that I thought relevant.

              That really surprises me. I have a friend with an original owner 1969 that was built in late October, 1968. His car definitely has the original gas cap and it has the rubber gasket.

                  I plasced a rubber gasket on the gas cap but it shriveded up and fell into the tank. Does any body know where I can get one that is compatable with todays gas?

                    Joe, I would think the easy way out is to avoid the issue. Get a paper gasket from the big box Corvette suppliers. If you are having your Corvette judged, put the rubber seal on for the day and then take it off and replace with the paper one for driving.
