    Rear Shock access holes 1958

Behind the fiberglass cover for the fuel tank are two access holes for the top of the rear shocks, what covers these holes? Can't seem to find anyting in suppliers books that mention this.

    Bob,

I had the same issue/question.. The answer was .... NOTHING.. at least for my 1960. I was told that if I cover the holes I would create gas fumes that would put me into a deep sleep while driving. I am not sure this is 100% the case for the 1958. You can search for the thread for the access holes and you will see the conversation.

I have checked the AIM and other reference books and no mention of anything covering these holes. You would think that exhaust fumes would enter through these holes or am I missing something.

The fuel tank cover is sealed to the body. Fumes (and tire smoke) will enter the cabin if the fuel tank cover is not sealed.

On a '57, those two access holes (just rearward of the rear edge of the fuel tank opening on each side) use a #3740260 seal (square fiberboard) glued to the panel. A.I.M. section J, sheet 3.

            Bob,

Please review this thread. As I understood it I would die a painful flesh-eating death if I covered these holes up.. BUt sometimes I read things wrong.. so you decide.

              Al -

Apples and oranges - we're talking about two different sets of holes. The ones to leave alone and open are large, in the bottom of the underbody, shown in the photo below; they ventilate the otherwise sealed fuel tank compartment. The two shock absorber nut access holes are quite small, inside the car, rearward of the fuel tank cover.

                Al,

We're talking different holes. Your previous thread referred to holes in the floor of the tank cavity which are there to allow gas fumes to dissipate. Don't seal these. The holes Bob refers to are behind the tank cover on top, and are sealed as Mr. Hinckley stated. Early '57s and prior used masking tape, then the seal he noted. I'd bet the seal continued on through the C1 years if you check the AIM.

Got it.. I used a sheet of drywall screen to cover them up. but it left it open with the slits so it could vent. I get a lot of dust coming from the rear deck lid so I may have to go back and use some 3m caulking around the gas tank cover to seal out the dust and the fumes..I ride with the hard top on so you can only imagine the crap I inhale.

I have to change out the shocks and springs this week anyway so I will take a photo of it to make sure
