    1973 speedometer cable why two?

What was the design reason to have two separate speedometer housings coupled together for the 1973 vette?
In 73 cruise control was not offered.
Was this configuration used multiple years?

The coupled speedometer shaft arrangement was not used for all 1973 Corvettes----just those with M-40 automatics. The same configuration was used for some pre-1973 C3 applications and it was also used for automatic transmission applications through at least 1977. Why was it used? That I do not know.

I suspect it was an assembly air. I believe it was easier for the assemblers to connect the two cables together rather than make a connection at the transmission. It is just a guess on my part, however.

If your looking for N.O.S. replacements, prepare for a long search. Finally found the upper one last week on ebay, the lower one found at Carlisle last year. (I had kept my eyes open for these the last 15 years or so!). N.O.S. ones should have "AC" embossed on female retaining 'nut'. There are lots of "AC" cables CLAIMING to be the right ones, and they may be close, and will probably work, but if your a purist... Upper-CC-529, lower CC-291 are the AC #'s.
