I was a Sheet Metal Repairman in the Air Force from 1966/1970. I shot and bucked more rivets than I care to remember. What is really interesting is when you cant see your partner. You do everything by sound and feel. The riveter puts the rivet in the hole the bucker puts the bar on the rivet. When the riveter fells the pressure of the bucking bar the riveter gives a short burst on the gun. If the rivet is bucked to the correct size he taps on the rivet once, if it needs to be shot some more he taps twice and they go to the next rivet. Two people that work well together can shoot a lot of rivets in a day.

Rosie the riveter. Notice no hearing protection. If you have never used an air rivet gun you can't understand the amount of noise produced.

I don't have pictures, but my wife ran the rivet gun and I held the bucking bar when I replaced all the seat retainers and seat belt brackets in the floor pan of my 60. Rosie the Riveter got nothing on her

Donald, I know what your saying. Rosie the riveter,that’s almost what I called my wife. Mary the riveter helped me replacing all the rivets in our ’68. We removed and replaced all the brackets in the floorpan, shoulder belt mounting brackets as well as number 4 body mount brackets.We end up using over 100 rivets sometimes she had the gun the other times she was bucking. She could get in places I had problems because of my size. The body was on a dolly which made it a lot easier. Without my better half (Mary) Icould never had done it.

That LOOKS more like a C-47 than a bomber.
At one time during my career at Tinker AFB, I was a sheetmetal/structural repair mechanic on B52s.
Now I'm part of a group that is doing a total (air)frame off restoration on an A26 which our group has been working on for 13yrs. As the maintenance officer, I'm the primary sheetmetal/structural repair person. More rivets than you can imagine!



This is what it will look like when ready to fly.


Several years ago---------------and many rivets since have gone by.


This is a wing and engine nacelle I'm stripping down to bare nothing.




Just one of MANY, MANY repairs I've done. I had to hand form the new piece.












A 6hr run on one of our newly overhauled engines.


Inside one of the fuel bays inside the wing.


And finishing touches to the fuel bay, ready for the self sealing bladder to be installed.




LOTS of rivets in between everything!

Fantastic "frame off resto".
Very cool pictures, I assume that is a fuel bladder being dropped into the wing?
