I'm looking for recommendations for a painter/artist who can repaint a spare gas door lid for me. As you know, the flags cannot be removed due to them being riveted in place and it would require someone with patients and skill. Any suggestions?

Re: 68 Gas Door - Re-Paint Expert Needed
Hi Jack,
I see the words 'spin rivet' is used in the TIM/JG. Is this the same fellow as 'drive rivet', which with some luck can be removed and re-used, or replaced?
What sort of paint are you looking to have put on your door?

They are not the same. The type of "rivet" used on the 1968 fuel door emblem is integral with the emblem. Once the emblem is removed by grinding off the rivet, it cannot be re-used.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

The rivets appear to be part of the flags emblem itself. It looks like they were peened/punched over. For the paint, I have a rattle can of International Blue that was made specially for it.Jack Corso

The "rivets" are actually part of the mounting stud on the emblem. The vendor of the doors used a process that "spun" the ends of the studs that left them bradded over to hold the emblem onDick Whittington- Top

I believe the emblem was installed at St. Louis. They had the special machine required to set the "rivets". It was also used to install the door to the hinge. I'll bet they were glad when this arcane process ended after 1968 in favor of nuts and screws. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I remember someone once posted a drawing of the tool that peened over the studs. I wouldn't think of searching for it, but if I had a 1968 in the garage I would have that image saved on my computer -- but that's just me.Terry- Top

Re: 68 Gas Door - Re-Paint Expert Needed
Reproductions of the 1968 fuel door emblem are available so if one had the tool one could, theoretically, achieve a factory-like installation of the emblem. However, no reproduction of the 1968 filler door is available. So, unless someone has developed a way to restore the door's integral "rivets", replacing or re-installing a door to the hinge in the original configuration would be a problem. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

That was me - I made a sketch of the spin-rivet mandrel (fits in a drill press chuck), and I think I gave it to Ed McComas; I remember scanning the sketch, but can't find the image at the moment. Will post it if I locate it.- Top

John, I thought it was you, but I didn't want to "out" you so publicly. Maybe Ed still has it.Terry- Top
