    '65 Ignition Key Question

Once the key is in the ignition and the car is started, should you be able to pull the key out of the ignition, leaving the car running or should the key not come out?
    Thanks for any advice.

no, key should not be able to come out when ignition is on. Drop a note to Pete Lindahl who is a regular here on the TDB and he can get you fixed up with a new OEM key that will not come out, as well as any other key/ lock work you might need. Find Pete in the members list under the Community button on the tool bar above.

      Mike,

Let us know how this works out. The key is not the only possible source of the problem, and a new key might therefore not solve the problem.

Hi Gary, I read this post a few days ago. and I had a few gm key blanks and had them cut and found out that my 63 vette keys no longer pull out, I was really stumped to find this worked as I was writing of my Ignition switch as the problem.I still cannot figue out why the key makes a difference. maybe the depth of the key cuts?? the old keys still work but were of the hardware store type. Ed,

Sometimes new keys, cut to code (not simply duplicated) will fix the problem, but other times the problem is with the tumblers in the lock core. Both key cuts and tumblers can and do wear, and that's why a new key might only be part of the problem and might not solve the entire problem.

Gary, The keys were done at the locksmith and where cut following the old key cuts. There was a restorer article done a few years ago on the switch being the problem, not the cylinder and tumblers. as I think when the tumblers wear the key stops turning.

              Ed,

Yes, there are several possible causes of the problem that Mike describes. I just wanted to let Mike know that a new key might not fix everything, but it's where I would starts since it's the cheapest thing to try first.

it worked like a charm for me, and if it goes deeper than that, Pete L can fix that too,
