Corvette Action Center vote: C-7s with V6s?

I received this email from the Corvette Action Center and thought it might be worth sharing here:

A source at General Motors has told Edmunds Inside Line that GM's engine production data indicate that GM produced 500,000 fewer V8 engines in 2011 than it did five years earlier in 2006.

With the success of V6 engines such as BMW's inline-6, as well as other notable V6 engines from other automakers, should the C7 Corvette get with the times and adopt a V6 engine, or should it stick with the heavier, less fuel efficient V8? Cast your vote at the Corvette Action Center and tell us what you think:

The Corvette Action Center's Corvette Forum is one of the largest online Corvette clubs featuring discussion forums for the C8 Corvette, C7 Corvette, C6 Corvette, C5 Corvette, C4 Corvette, C3 Corvette, C2 Corvette, C1 Corvette and more.

Hmmm. CAC seems not to proof read their emails.

The answer to this poll is a no brainer for anyone who has a Corvette.

as long as GM sells V-8 engines pickups there will be a V-8 corvette but i don't think that corvette will ever be the only GM in the lineup with a V-8 as it would be too expensive to just build a V-8 for one car line

Way back in the seventies, Charles Fayette Taylor (1894-1996), Professor Emeritus and Director of the MIT Sloan Automotive Engine Laboratory (1933-1960) and author of a two-volume 1300+ page tome on the internal combustion engine that I've referenced many times stated that small V-8 engines could deliver similar fuel economy to similar sized vibration-intensive fours.

The switch to four cylinders was a much about cost reduction as it was about fuel economy.

It's a little late to make any architectural changes on the C7 since it's less than 18 months from the showroom, but my understanding is that is will have a smaller than current direct injection V-8 engine, but a smaller and lighter car will maintain performance similar to the current model.

We should feel fortunate that GM sells so many trucks because as Clem said, as long as GM builds V-8s for trucks, there should be a light weight high performance version for the Corvette (and other GM performance cars) that can be machined and assembled on the same production lines.

Old "news." There have been rumors of a V6 Corvette since C3 days. Every year or two, the media dusts off the topic and rehashes it. Goes hand in hand with the rear/mid engine Corvette stories.

I Think in the 80's there was talk of the rotary engine for the corvettes. That never happened, and would say that most of us that where around in the 60,s70,s like the sound and feel of a V8 engine with some horsepower.Even when they came out with the Gran National and GNX v-6 turbos they just lack something, They were powerful engines, but I could not get away the big block cars and the power house small blocks.

                    Scott -

I got it too - dumb question for a poll, as that decision was made a LONG time ago; but, they don't know how the industry operates or what lead times are. GM has spent over a Billion dollars over the last two years to tool up two engine plants for the upcoming new smaller V-8, so it's not even worth talking about a V-6.

the V-8 is cheaper to build than a twin turbo V-6 as ford charges a lot extra for its eco booost V-6 in the F-150 over the V-8
