Vapor canister and spark plug shields

Did 1971 Corvettes have vapor canisters? Spark plug shields? If so on the shields what size bolt or are they the same as the valve cover bolts with the same head mark and did they require lock washers?

    Thanks,

    Hi Scott
Yes, 71 model year cars had the ECS with a vapor canister.
Small block engines had sparkplug heat heat shields for all 8 plugs, and '2 boomarangs'; also ignition shielding on the rear pair of plugs on each side. Which are you asking about in regards to the bolts?

Thanks, Alan. The spark plug shields (that look like cones) bolts or screws to something, right? If they bolt on are the bolts the same as valve cover bolts and with headmarks like TR?

        Hi Scott,
Ah! Big Block parts! I looked at the AIM but am too dumb to know what I'm seeing so I can't help, but this will get you to the top again for some new reads!

No spark plug heat shields on 71 big block. ECS canister, yes.

Well actuall Scott was kind enough to ask the questions on the board for me. Been so swamped with work.

So if anyone has a complete Vapor canister, bracket nuts, bolts, hoses clips and the lower shield it sits on let me know. I need one for my 71 454 auto.

I had thought the 71 454 came with spark plug shields. Did I goof in buying a set?? I was looking at a 66 B/B mid year and they had them. Oh well brain cells are not working these days or it must be the paint I am smelling while painting the newly rebuilt engine.

            Thanks, grant

Okay it must be the paint. It's like the same question but in food. A chef asked for baby potatoes today. I made the emergency delivery to him 1/2 hour drive away. I bring him baby potatoes about 1 to 1 1/2 inch in diameter. HE says no he wants them 1/2 the size......I told him that is mini baby potatoes......I told him he needs to order them in advance. So much for his special dinner menu tonight.

Regarding the spark plug shields. I should be actually call them Spark plug "BARREL" shields. I looked in the AIM book but couldn't see it. Then I look at Paragon or corvette Central and it is listed as the barrel shields. So it seems my 71 should have them. Now the question is the bolt that bolts the barrel shield to the heads. What are the head markings and does it have a star like washer built in. I've seen in the vendors catalog the 65 and 66 has raised edge and L embossed letter. Is the 71 TR? or a square marking like the bellhousing shield bolt??
Need to wear a mask from now on when painting.

              Hi Grant,
Here are a few pictures of a 71 canister. There was some variation in the top, (number of nipples and their location), as the model years went by. Note there is a number moulded and date (?) stamped into the top.
Hope these help you to recognize the right canister when you come across one.
              Regards,
              Alan

                Grant,

Let me clarify my previous response on the heat shields. I have an early 71 LS5, Sept 70 build, and it does not have heat shields. My understanding is that very late 71's started having them and all 72 LS5's did. So I suppose it really depends on you car build date and when they were "officially" cut into production.

                  Hi Alan
Thanks for the Help. Now I have to go searching for a complete set up. Restoring the 71 is learning experience. The 68 and 69 was kind of easier.
If you come across any let me know.
I recall there was some discussion on the Rear bumper bolts and bracket mounting bolts inside the rear frame area. The rear bolts on the side of the frame rail bumper bracket were grey/blackish phosphate along with the serrated washer. Bolts that hold the plastic tire carrier were zinc or cad plated. The bolts that hold the brackets of the rear lower bumper were also zinc or cad plated. The bolts holding the rear tire carrier long bolt is also zinc or cad plated.
The outside bolts that bolt the rear of the bumpers I have seen zinc, cad plated.
                  Hope that helps.
                  Grant

                    Hi Tom
I have an Apri 71 454 so I guess I don't have to put on the spark plug barrels. Maybe if I get a chance to judge at Seaside I can maybe see a few 71's.
Now I am on the hunt for a Vapor Canister set up. If you see one let me know and I thought 68 stuff is weird.

                    Thanks for your input.
