Re: 1970 454 w/ factory 3X2 ?
Proteam had a '69 L/88 a couple of years ago, that once upon a time, about 1971, had a fully modified LS-7 engine in it. The car was about 45 miles from me. Almost lost two vehicles one night when we went to a street race when this car was running. something to do with the NC Highway Patrol and pre-arranged street racing. With the tires of the day it was impossible to keep from breaking the tires loose in third gear. And you would not believe 4th gear.
Traction from a roll is like this:
1st gear: riding on ice
2nd gear: mix of snow and sleet on the road
3rd gear: wet road
4th gear: pretty well dried out if shifted in when fully hooked in 3rd

Re: 1970 454 w/ factory 3X2 ?
Joe, I can't follow your math. If they all start with L, that means the first possibility is only 1.
If the second could be a letter or number, that means the second possibility is 36
If the third is always a number, that means the third posibility is 10.
That looks like 1 X 36 X 10 or 360 possibilities.
Even if there was a possibility of numbers AND letters in the 3rd spot it looks like there be 1296 possibilities.
What'd I do wrong?
Also, what is the engine code for a Z28?
The second and third characters are the only variable characters.
They could be both alpha characters and there are 26 letters in the alphabet. So,
26 X 26 = 676
They could be an alpha character and a number, so:
26 X 10 = 260
They could be a number and an alpha character, so
10 X 26 = 260
They could both be numbers, so
10 X 10 = 100
The sum of the above is the total number of combinations
676 + 260 + 260 + 100 = 1,296
So, you are correct and I was incorrect in my first calculation ( I forgot to consider the two different types of alpha characters and numbers)
There was no engine RPO for the Z-28. At least, there's not one that I have ever seen identified. All RPO's beginning with "Z" are equipment PACKAGES and most don't even involve an included engine. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

The Z/28 engine never had a sales code - it was just part of the Z/28 "Special Performance Package". I wanted "DZ 302" plates for mine, but Michigan won't let you use letter-number combinations on personalized plates; I settled for "302".Attached Files- Top

Re: 1970 454 w/ factory 3X2 ?
Increasing stroke alone, all other things equal, both engines will make about the same peak power at the same mean piston speed regardless of the manufacturer's ratings, which in that period of "SAE gross" were highly manipulated by the marketing people.
The longer stroke engine will make more peak torque (torque is primarily a function of displacement and compression ratio), and more torque across the range up to the power peak, so the stroker will make more average power through the useable rev range.
All Corvette 427s had the same peak torque rating - 460 lb-ft. IIRC the LS-5 was rated at 500 lb-ft, so you can expect that these stillborn 454 configurations would have had the same or very similar peak torque rating.
Thus the old adage: there is no substitute for cubic inches.

Thanks Duke! I would like to think GM would have changed something to make both options more of a 'Bear' than their predecessors though.
Terry got me to thinking that the next project would be fun if I made a '70 3x2 454, FUN!!!!

the reason for bringing back the old names, rpo's etc. is spelled $$$$$$$$$ or the hope for them by gm, ford etc. just marketing 101 and money saving by not reinventing the wheel.Michael

[QUOTE=Norris Wallace (6139);605879]Here's a picture of my '69 Camaro. It has an LS7 crate motor that is bone stock except for headers/3" exhaust and MSD ignition. QUOTE]
I assume the LS7 you refer to here is a new version, or the old one? This is where the confusion comes in of recycled RPO L series motors.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Never assume. Everything I surround myself with is old.
