Re: 1958-1960 Hood and Trunk Emblems
Thank you Philip for taking the time to look and respond. I am hoping that more owners take a look at their original emblems and let me know what they find. I realize the gold color is typically deteriorated from the front of the letters, flag poles, and "V", but the top flag edges might show gold or silver; whichever the case may be.- Top

Joe, this is a picture of what is supposed to be an original. Looks like gold along the top edge of the red flag, but not on the checked flag.

Re: 1958-1960 Hood and Trunk Emblems
Joe,
My originals look just like Don's. It does appear that the flag area has gold in it also. Maybe the whole thing was painted gold first then the red, white and black were laid over the gold. I can easily tell the red was done this way as there is gold under the red and it appears like I can see some gold under the white in the cross flags.

Re: 1958-1960 Hood and Trunk Emblems
The red paint was translucent so that when the gold was applied on the back side, it made the red color stand out. There is gold inside the red flag in the bowtie, the 3 straight "tick marks", and the fleur de lis. A confirmation of gold on the edges of the flags is what I am seeking. It is difficult to see after it has deteriorated. Thanks for the input.- Top

Re: 1958-1960 Hood and Trunk Emblems
Ok, I got the magnifying glass and the flashlight out and can see no evidence of gold on the checkered flag. The top surface only has the white / black paint and the edge has no paint on it.
The red flag definitely has red / gold not only on the top surface but along the edge also.
Since the flags are "raised" I'm calling the "edge" the vertical portion of plastic between the top surface of the flag and the flat area of the emblem clear plastic base.
Camera batteries are dead, so pictures will have to wait a bit. I don't know if the macro setting on the camera can capture the edge.......

Re: 1958-1960 Hood and Trunk Emblems
Thomas, that is an interesting observation that no apparent gold on the edge of the checkered flag, but along the vertical edge of the red flag. I hope the macro photos turn out.
Maybe others will dust off their original emblems and see what is present on the vertical edges of the two flags.- Top

Re: 1958-1960 Hood and Trunk Emblems
Are you asking because of the way they are judged? I use the ones from Harrington Mold and still get one point taken off for each one. The reason used they say origional ones were white on the sides which I do not think is correct. Why pay $170 for them if they deduct one point each?- Top

Re: 1958-1960 Hood and Trunk Emblems
Philip, the emblems you provided photos of are Trim Part reproduction emblems. Harrington Mold is a company in California that makes custom molds. One of the owners had a supply of what appeared to be NOS emblems several years ago (at least 2008) and was selling them for $170 to $180 per emblem. I have seen a photo of one of them and it was not one of the poor reproductions put out by Trim Parts. I am not aware that anyone has purchased emblems from this man in several years. I left the owner a message to call me two weeks ago and never heard back from him.- Top
