How to route the Auto Neutral Safety Switch cabling?

I'm replacing my Auto Neutral Safety Switch on my -66 Coupe. But I don't see how to route the new cabling. The cables goes from the shifter under the carpet almost straight to the door. At the door it goes inside the body in direction towards front of the car. But the hole in the body where the cable and connectors should enter is very narrow and it is not possible to fit the connectors into this hole. Anyone that has experience from replacing this switch and can describe how to route the cable? Thanks for any help on this. Hasse Ryden #868

It doesn't go into the body. It runs under the metal strip that the rear wire harness also runs under. If you have a AIM, check it under automatic transmission.

Not sure what you mean by the '... hole in the body ...', but the 4-wire harness runs from the switch assembly, under the carpet to the body ledge for the door, then forward toward the firewall, then upward near the relay/vent cable area. From there --

-- the two purple 12 gauge wires pass through the large firewall grommet that also serves the wiper motor, ballast resistor & oil pressure. You must remove the connectors from these purple conductors, pass them through the grommet, then re-install them on the engine side of the firewall for connection to the 14 gauge purples for starting circuit.

-- the other wires (18 gauge, green & brown, I believe) stay inside, under the dash, behind the console & fit to the backup light connector somewhere near the clock/radio.

Thanks. But my concern is when it comes "under the carpet to the body ledge for the door". Its here where it goes into and under the "metal strip that the rear wire harness also runs under" as Russ refers to. How do you route the cables under this metal strip? Can you remove the metal strip? How is it fastened? Or do you need to remove the connectors in order to route it thru the rather narrow whole and under the metal strip? Please bear with me, my car has glued non-original carpets so it is hard to see details.

Hans, the metal strip will pop off with the help of a flat blade screwdriver inserted from the top side of the strip at the retention bkts. I used electrical tape to secure the safety wires to the rear harness as I had trouble keeping all the wires inside the metal strip when trying to pop it back in place. BTW. to re-install the strip . place in into the lower end of the retainers and with pressure snap it back into the upper end.( You may have to slap it into place with your hand). Hope this helps.
