I am restoring a 54. The original Blue Flame Six does not have a filter - but an aftermarket filter came with my car and I am considering re-installing it. Any comments - suggestions - tech info ?

Re: 54 oil filter
I had a remote filter in the boxes what came with my car, although the oil pasages are plugged, but I have an 54 passenger car engine. My 53 Belair came stock with a similar filter. Is the answer related to a special construction of the oiling system in a corvette engine?
I also would appreciate guidance to a source of information explaining the differences between the passenger car and corvette oiling systems.- Top

Re: 54 oil filter
Bob - to my knowledge the oil system between the Corvette and Pass car is the same. Neither (Std Chevy or Corvette) came from the factory with an oil filter unless the Pass car was optioned. There was no such option offered in the Corvette that I know of. The Filter I have is from a Pass car I thought to add it simply because it adds one level of protection not otherwise in the Corvette (ps: I had the very same filter on a 1947 Willys Jeep I restored years ago) . I have since decided to leave it off, and keep the Corvette original since I don't plan to drive it every day. I'll just keep an eye on the oil and change it more often.- Top

Re: 54 oil filter
Thank you. I also will leave the filter off.
I was concerned that the passenger engine might have some kind of restriction in the block to force the oil flow through the filter. I didn't want to start the engine to find out I had low or no oil pressure.
By the way that Belair was a convertible I bought when I was in college for $50, and it was well optioned, although it had no top. It was a bit cold driving in the winter and I had to brush snow off the driver's seat a few times. I would have preferred a corvette back then, but the chevy ran great and was a lot of fun.- Top
