    Rare 1967 l-88 sells !

ONLY 20 of the 1967 Corvettes made had the L-88 engine.

Last evening, KEVIN MACKAY, well known east coast restorer and collector purchased the DOUG DEWER car that he owned for 37 years. We lost Doug in 2010. The family is very happy this car is going to a good home.

1967 #17527 L-88 convertible, one of 20 cars made, was sold originally to John Peter Hill of Huntington Park, California.

The selling dealer was DANA Chevrolet, 8730 Long Beach Blvd., South Gate, California 90260. The selling salesman was Dick Guldstrand. The handwritten purchase order is dated 3-29-67. Many pieces of documentation are with the car

John owned and raced the car in A/P Class in California events and sold it in late August 1970.

The 2nd owner raced the car at Riverside FROM 11/9/1975 thru 11/4/1984.

Car race number 92, Roll bar SCCA #19-818. The car has received the NCRS Heritage Award and many others over the years.

Looks like my garage ! What a special old car, to a good home and I'm sure we will see more of the car in the future.

Interesting piece of history, I guess all 20 of these were cut up and added to as racers like this one originally? Or are there some that look like a regular street car?

        No.

Yes, but I don't have any recent information on the white 67 coupe that I inspected in 1979. It was stock, except for the engine, and had just been purchased by a collector who was going to restore it.

Was this the first one ? VIN 9097. Tony DeLorenzo's car, sold to Canadian Doug Rowe in late '60s; raced extensively by him in Canada; he sold to friend of mine in early '80's. Pic was taken at border crossing during Bloomington delivery to Wayne Walker (ZIP). This car's history may have been written up extensively by others.
          Check thumbnail below big pic.

Alas, Doug Rowe passed away here in Calgary, a few months ago.

I think that you are referring to Dave Walters car. Rogers Corvettes center owns the other 67 L88 white coupe.

                Re: Rare 1967 l-88 sells !

The only 67 L88 I have ever seen in person looked like a regular 67 BB Coupe. In 2007 I had my 65 396 Coupe parked in the Duntov Display Area at the Marl. Mass. convention.
A row of L88 race cars were put on display right behind where I was parked. The first day I was there was spent cleaning and visiting with old friends. I did notice that 2 brothers from Conn. had at least 3 cars included in the special display area - directly in front of my car was their 67 Red/Black BB Coupe which I thought was a restored regular BB Coupe. The second day I was sitting in back of my car and noticed as one of the brothers lifted the hood on the red coupe and I saw the air cleaner built into the hood and knew it was one of the very rare 67 L-88's - it was in great shape. I think the other 2 cars they had there I think I remember to be a 65 Blk. Coupe and a 50 something Blk. Coupe both I think I remember were F.I. cars. I remember thinking I would like to have about 20% of what those 3 cars were worth.

If I'm not mistaken at least three of those twenty 67 L88's are now on Long Island....pretty amazing..

I am HAPPY for Kevin, but sad again for Doug (and his family) I had the good fortune to speak to him at length about the L-88 cars. Phil 8063

I remember that one as a no sale at Scottsdale RM in 2007 for $1.55 million, only to sell in Monterey in 2010 for $1.25 million, guess sometimes it is not good to wait....

I was at RM when the 67 L88 was for sale. There was no real money on the car past 750 but an auction company can run a car up as long as it's below the reserve price.

Thanks Steve, I was not told who owned the car, nor have I heard much about it since. A friend of mine was "storing" it for a brief time.

Actually the car was not purchased by Mackay. My understanding is that he has been asked to restore the car.
