Deck lid strickers

The strickers on my 65 deck lid have a big and little end. How are they installed, big or little end to the front or different for each side as mine where installed. Also, what is the correct finish? I read that they were installed after paint.

There is a taper to them. The higher side engages last so it would be towards the lid. Yes, installed after paint.
