VIN # 194379S717604----Early March '69 production, Cp., automatic. Anyone know this car; is is registered on any of the sites? Was in Texas early '80's, then Chicago late '80's/early '90's. Believed to be an L88, side pipes. Just wondering, G.

Re: 1969 l88 ????
Carl, just as a shot in the dark I was curious if you might know this one:
I've got 16570 (Fathom Green/saddle leather) that was sold by Jack Head Chev. in Alhambra, Ca. (bought the NCRS delivery report on it) and have been looking for information on it also (unsuccessfully) for about 20 years. It has a gas tank replacement from a dealer in Arkansas that was done a long time ago for unknown reasons, and a title search traced it to Texas in the '80's which was a dead end.
The reasons I mention it on this thread are: relatively close serial number, sold near L.A. and unknown original drivetrain. When I bought this car, running with a smallblock in the '80's there were several things that struck me about it. The original hood was gone, replaced with a later model hood that replaced the wiper door assembly. It had the T.I. box on the LF inner, high RPM tach, and YC transmission, only available with SHP or HD which was serial numbered to the car, and the 3.36 rear which I read somewhere years ago was only available with SHP or HD also. There were two holes, about an inch in diameter cut into the rear of the passenger compartment with clean holes which didn't look holesaw cut that I never figured a reason for. That seemed REALLY odd was the fact that the car had ONE of the brake caliper supports from J56 brakes under the right front seat when it was removed (no power booster on car, but could have been removed when changed to smallblock as lines from master cyl to proportioning valve was parts house stuff). Somebody had already put stainless calipers on the car with Vette Brakes stamp, so if the brakes were J56 the calipers were long gone. When stripping the paint I also noticed that the hole for the radio antenna appeared to have been cut with a holesaw also, as it was not as clean as all the factory holes I've seen. It also had an aftermarket radio/cassette player and aftermarket speaker. None of this defines anything, but also doesn't eliminate any possibilities.
When I talked to a car lot in Texas years ago where the trail ended, the guy told me the original engine had been there and somebody had painted the heads silver and "it still had the original factory 2 four barrels". I never figured out what that meant unless he was confused on the tri power and it could've been L89 for the silver heads, but I've always wondered in the back of my mid if it could have been L88 also which the brake brace and odd hole for the antenna would seem to at least have made as a possibility, and of course the missing hood and gas tank failed to eliminate the possibilty also. Other odd thing, in spite of all the SHP or HD components listed above, the car had a 400 HP badge on the console. I said on a similar post a while back that it was factory side exhaust, but I was looking at it latter and realized that was one of my other cars sticking in my memory and this was an under car exhaust car.
Past ads in the Information Wanted section of the Driveline as well as a post or two on the board here and several other Corvette websites have never produced a hit. I don't know if I'll ever get around to doing the car. It's been sitting in my warehouse in primer for about 25 years, but it'd be cool to know the history, or at least the original drivetrain.- Top
