78 - Flasher alm-horn in console. (wiring question)

    Hi,

I have a 1978 Corvette and I am replacing a few items related to the console. I have the corvette asm manual and it looks like the wire to the Flaser ALM-Horn has been cut, replaced with a black wire and run through the fire wall. It is then connected to a horn in the left fender to a yellow wire. Looks to be a ground. See other picture.

Does anyone know what the yellow wire is?
    Seems like its a ground?

The yellow wire that is cut in the console seems like it might at one time gone to the same place the as the black wire (Horn ground inside left fender)

Please see the picture of the yellow wire in the picture by my finger.

The wiring schematic shows a yellow 14 gauge wire from the flasher to the horn while another 20 gauge wire routes from the relay to the driver's side switch. The other wire from the horn is 14 gauge orange that routes to the relay and the fuse box.

    Horn mounts to the chassis.

So does the anti-theft system work? I've posted the schematic for your reference.

Thanks very much for the diagram. It is hard to read and when I enlarge it gets blurred. I'm guess this is from a book. Can you let me know which one?

The plot thickens. It looks like they cut the yellow wire in the console and replaced it with a black one that looks to ground the horn.
I found the yellow wire inside the left fender where it was cut.
I also found the orange wire with plug that attaches to the horn.
I plugged the orange wire in and the alarm went off.

I guess I understand why they cut at least one of the wires.

I'm guessing there is a short or bad switch somewhere in the alarm.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. The car does not have power windows or power locks.

      Thanks,

      Frank

I sent you an email but it came out of the 1978 Corvette "Electrical Troubleshooting Manual" with the Pace Car on the cover. Send me an email and I'll send the original jpeg file.

Sounds like it could be the relay. For the anti-theft horn, the orange and yellow are the wires that signal the horn to alarm and are directed by the relay...so the easy fix when it makes noise and you don't want it to is...cut the freaking wire! Go figure.

Power windows and locks were original...anti-theft base equipment so no connection there.

I did troubleshooting with both the horns and anti-theft in my 78 Pace Car and concluded the horns needed rebuilding. I used The Horn Works http://www.classiccarhorns.com and was pleased with his work. He also sent me the trouble shooting instructions so that I could determine if it was the relay, horn or something else.

Glad that it worked out. BTW, you can pickup a new circuit board for the orange box for about $37.00.
