where/how do i get a shim for a water pump pulley?

In an effort to eliminate an illusive belt squeal, I have replaced the alternator and had the water pump rebuilt. While it was apart I cleaned up and painted the pulleys, fan, and alt bracket.

I have started to put it back together and noticed that the pulleys are not all lining up. Are there shims that I can put behind the water pump pulley to bring it out and get it better lined up with the crank pulley?

How far off do you think they are?
Shimming a little bit wouldn't hurt anything (IMO) but that would depend on how far off they are.
AND, the first thing to do is check the fan hub location to make sure the rebuilder has it in the rght location. Remove the fan & pully, lay a straight edge across the hub and measure from the forward edge of the hub to where the pump housing meets the block. This measurement is 5.625 (5 5/8th) + 1/16th. The waterpump gaskets should not be included in the measurement, normally you measure this with the pump laying on a flat surface.

I'd chect this first, the hub can be moved on the shaft but but you'd have to pull the pump and use a press to do it.

i have posted before how to use a piece of 1/4" diameter rod to check your pulley alignment

Or you can use a gear puller and pull it forward a bit on the engine.

Maybe I'm missing something or it may be an optical illusion but in looking at the picture, it appears to me your water pump pulley is forward of the alternator pulley. Shimming the water pump would seem to move the pulley even further ahead.

I think the issue is the alignment of the waterpump pulley and the crank pulley. In that regard, it does appear that the waterpump pulley is slightly to the rear of the crank pulley and, thus, shimming between the waterpump pulley and the hub will correct that.

As far as alternator pulley alignment, that's another matter. I think that cannot be discerned from the photo due to "parallax" error.

Joe - in looking at it again, I agree with you on the alignment problem between the crank pulley and the waterpump. Shimming would be the answer.
