P.S. Good news for western Canadians. Local parts store (here in Calgary) referred me to a local Gregg Distributors (had never heard of them) and they ordered a $13 spray can of SP-350 for overnight delivery from their Edmonton warehouse. 12 branch stores in Alberta, 3 in British Columbia, and 1 in Saskabush . website www.greggdistributors.ca

Gary, no black paint. I'm going to post some photos soon!

I just got off the phone with Grainger, they do still carry the SP 350 in the 16 oz. spray cans for 11.72 ea. or 140.64 for 12 count case.

            Regards,

                  Rich,

I have tried several products over the years, and the best solution that I have found is Pre- Lube 6 from Quanta. As I write this I am conducting a little test with Pre-Lube 6. I have cut a piece of an NOS coil spring and sprayed it with the aforementioned and it is has been hanging in my shed for the last 6 months. I am happy to report that there are no signs of corrosion to the metal. I usually spray it on and wipe off the excess. One of my cars sits in total darkness at 78 degrees and I repeat the process once a year, but not because I have to, just because I'm a little anal. Good stuff!!!

                    Gary-----

Later-manufactured SERVICE springs often have a black finish. Actually, I think it's powder coat rather than PAINT but, regardless, there is a black finish. Some of the later-manufactured SERVICE springs do not have this finish and are bare but many are black The 331319 pictured is usually bare, even if of later manufacture.

Early SERVICE pieces were bare. I expect that what happened was that GMSPO had complaints about the bare springs, which were not boxed and therefore had no rust control "VAPEX" paper, rusting in stock. Customers for SERVICE parts do not like to be handed a rusty part. So, the spec on the springs was changed to require a coating.

I do not think that any PRODUCTION coil springs at least through 1974 were black finished. It's possible, I suppose, that later C3 were so-coated, though.

                            Hi Rich,
Thanks very much for taking the time to post the picture.
It's interesting to see a spring without rust or a 'recent' finish on it!

Gary...I bought two sets of NOS "100" coil springs and both were painted black and still had the tags on. I noted the finish under the tag and found that Seymour Stainless Steel color paint was a perfect match if you want a matching paint color to the raw steel. I blasted the black paint off.
