Single Stage Metallic Painting - FAWN BEIGE

After research and trying samples, I've selected PPG DCC CONCEPT SINGLE STAGE ACRYLIC URETHENE. They have great technical support and were able to do a great match on PPG 22005 FAwn Beige using a Prophet Formula.

I'm comfortable shooting the semi-gloss (using SU4985 matting agent) on trunk, interior, door jambs etc. and putting the car back together for the final shoot. I'm in SW Florida and have not as yet located a shop with a good down draft booth and a painter profecient at shooting single stage metallic urethene.

If anyone has any recomendations, it would be greatly appreciated.

Ed, a friend of mine had someone in Coco Beach (a restoration shop) paint his blue 67. It was a long time ago and I don't have any information on the shop, but the paint job was excellent. The best that I had ever seen. Sorry about not having the name of the shop but I hope this helps.

Ed, Be sure to check the metallic size in the sun. You should not see metallic particles standing out or visible as individual flakes. Corvettes of that time period used a very small metallic that could barely be seen even in direct sun. If your flake is to large it can be a 50% deduct for metallic content or size.

I agree with Tom . Almost all PPG matches are color only matches and have todays metalic (large) . I had a 62 fawn with red interior .The metallic is so fine you can hardly see it in the sun and not at all in the shade . The only company I know of that still makes the correct size metalic is Dupont . They also can still mix the correct colors for you . Do yourself a favor and have a large (at least 12"X12" )test panel painted in what ever brand you chose and compare it to a Orig. car. Bill

Tom; When I spoke to the PPG Tech Rep. we discussed metallic size. He called out DMC981 FINE ALUMINUM. Looks good so far on small pieces.

Be sure to check it in direct sunlight. This is where it will show the most flake. Find an original finish car and look closely at the metallic size it should be barely visible in direct sunlight. I don't want to discourage you from using the finish you like, I just don't want you to go to all the expense and labor and find you have a 50% deduct on color. Color is worth 85 points and there are no condition points. That's a pretty tough hit. Most tech reps today don't have any idea what the older colors look like unless they have restoration experience.
