Reset C1 Wiper Motor Circuit Breaker

    Hi,
I was trying to adjust my wiper motor sliding resistor and left the ignition on too long, which I think has tripped the thermal circuit breaker on the wiper motor, as it no longer works, and was working fine before this. and there is voltage to the motor.

Can anyone tell me how to reset this so that the motor will work again.please?

There is no internal circuit breaker in these motors. If you put 12 Volts directly to the motor and it is properly grounded, it should work. Leaving the key on too long would not hurt the wiper motor unless you burned out or shorted the speed resistor. Even then, it should still work on high speed. Try connecting battery power directly to the motor to confirm this. Dan

Thanks Dan, why does the maintennce guide have it in the diagrams?

I just looked a the ST-12 and there is a thermo breaker, you should be able to remove the motor and check it. Looks to be a bimetal arrangement and may be your problem. The key on to long should not have casued the problem may be the motor or wipers are jammed which could cause the motor to overheat.

          Guys,
I just check the resistor with a multimeter and it showing approx 1 ohm, is that enough? Also, when the ignition is on, there is no difference to the voltage whether I measure the red wire to earth or the black to earth, which should not be the case. Could this be the resistor or the circuit breaker causing this?

I would say the resistor is about correct, having 12 volts on the red lead takes the thermo out of the problem, I would say your motor is the problem. I would recheck the grounding of the housing just to make sure.

Try tapping lightly on motor housing, sounds like a brush or brushes are not making contact on the armature on motor, may have warn out or carbon buildup.......

After trying everything, including testing the motor resistance and checking the contacts, all seemed right. Then, inexplicably it started working again. Maybe you were right about carbon build up or issues with the brushes, Adam?

Anyway, it's all back together and working....well as soon as I can get a replacement slider.

                cheers,
                Guys.

I was not so lucky with my 1960 wiper motor, the brown wire became exposed where it entered the motor casing and shorted out. It melted the solder and released one of the two wires that is connected to the thermal circuit breaker. I hope it did not also fry the motor. I boxed it up and sent it to Tom Maxwell; out of my league.

Argh!...really sorry to hear that, Joe...I'll check my wire to make sure I'm not heading in the same direction...cheers!
