How do I install a new boot on a spare tire lock?

Can someone give me some advice about how to install a new rubber spare tire boot on a lock? It seems to me that the spare tire lock is too big to fit through the opening without tearing the new rubber boot? There has to be a trick that I am missing, there always is.

    Thanks in advance.....

    Bruce,

There is no trick. Presuming the boot is new, leave the boot in the sun for a few minutes to get it warm and then it will stretch over the lock. I've never had a problem with a new boot. Old, dried out boots are a completely different story. They can and will tear. GM still sells new boots, so if you have an old one and it tears, then just buy a new one.

      I can't resist, get a boot stretcher!

After sitting it out in the sun, then I put some baby powder inside the boot. Worked great!

I just installed one yesterday, tried hot water, but found that turning it wrong side out, and rolling it on from the bottom worked great.

            George,

I'd advise against using water, as the close fit between boot and lock can cause rusting.

Richard. the baby powder worked great. I also felt more comfortable stretching the rubber opening more. thanks
