Jim when I first saw the post about the shield I thought it was a 1969 addition to the door, but I wasn't sure enough about it to post that. I know for sure it is on my 1970, and I am now pretty sure about the 1969 change during the year. I think I scanned something about it from either the TSBs or the CSNs for the new 1968-69 manual.

Try getting some WD 40 or or other commercial type penetrant on to the latch

Ted good to hear you got your passenger door open. Let us know when you get the door panel off what you found that would not allow the door to unlatch.

Terry, I know for sure I have the shields on my 1970 also.

Door wouldn't open for the following reasons. First of all door lock was in locked position and the rod/lever that is activated by the inside lock knob had come off of the locking mechanism. If I would have had a key I could have unlocked the door from the outside and pushed the button and open the door. The 1968 apparently has no shielding over the lock assembly and with the window in the open position it was easy to use a screwdriver to raise the door lock lever and then just push the door button to open the door.
