    Perfection Gear Company Harvey Illinois

Anyone here ever heard of Perfection Gear Co in Harvey Ill.?

They must have been a supplier of transmission gears and parts to the automotive industry and I am curious if they were affiliated with Borg Warner in the sixties or seventies.

No affiliation that I know of, but I will ask my Brother. It is his birthday and I should suprise him with a pone call today. We used to live near Harvey back when, and he hung with some guys who worked there. They made a lot of replacement ring & pinion gears back in the day. They well might have made geard for BW as well it was a large shop.

      Tim:

Yes, I remember them well. I grew up in Harvey during this period, and walked by the factory every day while I was in high school (1961-1965). They made excellent products, but like so many of the other nearby factories, they closed up shop and moved out of town due to racial violence and a deteriorating work force. Our family moved also. Over the years the whole down is pretty much gone, with nothing but burned out buildings and concrete slabs along the main street to remind you of what used to be there. Similar to Detroit/Flint, etc. We also had Whiting Crane, Bliss&Laughtin Steel, Interlake/Acme Steel, Maremont Muffler, Allis-Chambers, and Wyman-Gorden. Wyman made forged steel cranks for many car, heavy equipment, and aircraft engines. Maremont made mufflers like the old "cherry bomb". All gone now.

Don't know whether Perfection Gear made gears for Borg-Warner or not. When they left town they moved to South Carolina and changed into what we now know as ZOOM GEAR. Their ZOOM products were fairly popular with hot rodders for rear gears and clutches, etc. Last time I looked, many of the products are now made off-shore.

Since Chicago (Harvey was a Chicago suburb) had a Borg Warner factory, it is possible that Perfection Gear supplied some of the gears......but I thought that BW made their own gears. Maybe Terry's brother and his friends will know more.

Back in the day a friend of mine bought Perfection gears for his '57 from J&G Speed Shop in Ft. Wayne, IN. 5.12's IIRC for 1/8 mile trips.

My '59 has a Zoom double roller timing set by Perfection American that I installed in '71. Zoom parts were lower priced and were good quality. Very popular at the time.

            Tim,

I happen to have a Perfection Gear transmission parts catalog, it covers models up through the 1977 years. The catalog does not have a plant location printed anywhere on the covers or inside. The part numbers correspond very closely to Borg Warner numbers in their catalog.

Thanks everyone for the reply's, the reason I asked is because I just purchased a new T10D-16 gear (input shaft) correct for a wide ratio 63 case. It's a nice looking gear made by Perfection Gear Co.
