    Ignition switch c1 1959 corvette

    C1 1959 CORVETTE

Could somebody confirm if my ignition switch is correct in its operation.

With the key out of the Ignition Switch and in Lock Position the switch cannot be turned.

Put the key in the Ignition Switch in Lock Position, the switch will turn. But the key can be removed in all positions i.e. OFF / On / Start is this correct.

So once you have used the key to unlock the ignition swithch you can remove the key and start and run the car without the key. The key only locks the ignition switch.

    Is this correct for Judging.

    Cheers Trevor (Australia)

I not certain, but there was an article in The Fall 2009 Restorer on how to make a replacement ignition switch work properly. In the article it says "In 58-64 Corvettes, the key can be removed when the key is turn to the lock and on positions, but it cannot be removed when it is in the off position. Unfortunately, the current replacemnt switches allow the key to be removed when the key is in the all three positions." I've attached a scan of that page. Look like an easy fix.

Trevor, My 63 switch works the same way, I believe this to be correct. once in the lock position and key removed is the only position you cannot turn the switch. any other position the key can be removed and ing. switch can be turned without key.

        Trevor,

I have a 1960, when I had the original ignition switch I could pull the key out while the car was running. But..I bought a new one and now I cant. I think.. that these switches get worned down at times and make it loose.

This is the issues I had

The NCRS PV Guide says that the '58-'62 key should not come out in "off", but wear will allow it to be removed. It will come out in "off" on my 100,000 mile '59.

Bill, what is it that wears in the switch? do you happen to know? tumblers in switch ot the cylinder it self? Thanks Ed

Ed: There is a bar on the side of the cylinder. If the bar is pushed, the key won't come out. Maybe there is a mating area on the switch that depresses that bar in the "off" position. That area on the switch wears and doesn't push on the bar anymore? I probably won't bother "fixing" mine. Bill
