    After Market Starters

The original starter on my 64 Coupe has finally failed. I want to put a after market starter on while I send the original back to Pirkle for re-build. Can I still get a replacement from GM? I looked online and could not see one in their system. Or do I just order one from one of the Vette stores? ANyone replaced one lately?

    Thanks!

Jace, I got a replacement starter from my local auto supply store. I asked for a starter that would fit my 63 and started life as a GM part. It worked fine until my original was rebuilt. Remember that a rebuilder does not look at the numbers so the case with the part number and date on my starter from the local guy was from a chevy truck. I think it cost $65.00

Jace, there's nothing wrong with rebuilt starters from the local auto supply. Take your core with you and compare it with the new one carefully. Pay the core charge and don't turn your old core in (obviously you know that). You also might want to ask around to see if any of your friends has a used small block (BB?) starter that will fit. You only need it for several months. You could also pull one from the junkyard and rebuild it, this is very cheap.

For an original replacement use Delco #323-236, also known as GM #12304044. This is a standard torque starter, as original for your application. It will be bolt-on and will be configured virtually the same as your original except for "numbers" and "dates". This starter is re-manufactured and not necessarily in the USA. Cost should be less than 75 bucks. How good is this unit? Well, I have cautioned about commercially rebuilt parts in another thread and this is a commercially rebuilt part. That being said, I have had pretty good luck with rebuilt starters and favor Delco.

For a high torque replacement, use Delco #336-1847, aka GM #19136156. You don't need this but you can use it.

            Joe,

The Delco #323-236 / 12304044 is now referencing a replacement PN of PG260 / 8000193. I assume this is the evolution of this PN and will still work?

I don't know what the numbers you mentioned are. They do not look like Delco or GM part numbers and I can find no record of them. My information says that the 323-236 or GM #12304044 are still available. If there's been a replacement, it must have happened VERY recently and with part numbers unlike any I've seen before. I suspect those numbers are for some other brand.

                Joe,

I went to the Delco Remy website and found the 323-236 / 12304044 and when I clicked on the link it said that it was now obsolete and referrenced an active number of 8000193 PG260. Maybe it is a new change?

I just checked the AC Delco web-site and I can't come up with those part numbers. I do find the 323-236 part number, though.
