    Judging Guide

Almost ready to have my car judged. I have copies of the judging sheets and I would like to judge my car myself before going to a meet but have some doubts about how to go about it.

As an example my car is an L84. The correct exhaust manifolds for the FI engine are 3797942 (L) and 3797902 (R). I have those manifolds on the car and both are original GM with the thin casting nubs and they show the correct cast-in part numbers. However there are multiple versions of the 3797902 manifold. The correct version for the FI car has no choke tube hole. Mine has the hole so it obviously is not correct but is original (from GM and for P/N). I imagine that the point loss may vary from judge to judge. The judging sheet shows 15 pts for originality and 15 points for condition (presumably the total for both manifolds, so 7-1/2 points for each one). Can I expect the deduction of 7-1/2 of 15 total points for the right manifold, or does the fact that is it an original 3797902 manifold count for something?

Given it is not correct for my engine, what happens with condition points? Do I loose all of them (15 total for both manifolds / 2 = 7.5 deduction). What "condition" problems result in deductions on manifolds?
    Thanks for any help.

Doug, if you lost 100 percent on originality then you get hit for 100 percent on condition. When judging the item/part remember CDCIF. Each is worth 20 percent of the total points. It could be as low as 20 percent of the 7.5 points. Rounding, say 2 points.

Hi Doug, sounds like it will score as a 'service replacement' part. Then you'll get all your condition points depending on how it shows. Harry is right, points should be very minor!!! Good luck with that old Paramus car!

          Doug,

Trying to effectively judge a car without any experience in applying NCRS Judging rules might give misleading results in either direction. If you have a local chapter, attend one of their schools on the basic principles and practices.

My own chapter (Quebec) is having a school on a '54 on Feb.20th, you or anybody would be welcome to attend [/shameless plug]

In principal, the only way a component can consistently get a complete deduct is if it's just not there. A generous judge might even give a set a headers 1 point if they came from a late C3 as at least they're GM and were OEM for a Corvette. Looking at the big picture, if the only variation from your manifold to the correct piece is the presence of the choke hole, that's pretty insignificant. Like Harry said, maybe a point or two.

Condition is judged separately- if your manifold has NO issues, then no deduct even if it's already accumulated an originality deduct. Damaged or deteriorated are the two key words. Excessive corrosion is the most common condition deduct.

Harry, both Dougs and my 64 came from Konners!

Thanks guys. Now I know what to expect. Michael I would probably take you up on your offer to come to your schoolhouse, but not this time of year.
