    Under dash wiring on 65

I was looking under the dash trying to find the horn relay which I eventually found under the hood. But on the steering column there was something attached to the steering column that was about the size of an M80 firecracker but a yellow waxy color looking like a capacitor with a single black wire lead coming out of each end. The black leads had a flat copper strip on the ends that someone had covered with electrical tape. Any ideas what this is and what it does? I don't know of anything that is not working except the clock. So maybe I am better off without it?

Also the group of wires that run down the top of the steering column there is a part holding all the wires parallel, that has a clip but feeling around up there I can't feel anything there to clip it on to to hold it on top of the column.

Any ideas on either of these? Thanks for your help.

There is a hole in the top of the column that the clip tang inserts into. It is very hard to get it in place unless you are a tiny person.

Thanks guys. Anthony where is the brake light switch located? The leads are only about 4 or 5 inches long. I am guessing the light must have stayed on and they disconnected it. Any idea what that yellow thing is? Thanks.

Jim the brake light switch is located near the top of the pedel lever below the piviot it should be white in color with a two wire connector going to it the 4 inch leads will rach it provided it is in the original location! the yellow thing is a capacitor stops the radio from "clicking" when the brakes are appied

In 1965, the originals are metal.

When I was reading this yesterday I was thinking that you were talking about a brake light indicator on the dash board not the rear brake lights. Is that the brake light switch you are talking about because the brake lights work? So does it sound like the brake lights are wired without the capacitor.

Jim yes most likely the harness is plugged into the switch so the brake lights will work normally, someone just decided not to reinstall the capacitor for what ever reasons. The wires tabs on the wires from the capacitior should slip in the connector just fine Line them up and push on the connector..

Here's the (metal can type) brake light switch and the capacitor (brass contacts at the ends of the wires are out of the picture). Off a late '65.
