You look for the VIN derivative of your car's vehicle identification number stamped on the rear vertical surface of the main case. If it matches your car AND if it appears to be an original stamping, the transmission is original to the car. At least, the main case is original to the car. You have basically no way of knowing if any of the other parts are original to the car.

There should also be a stamped date code. My 1966 Corvette has a body build date of "F24" (February 24, 1966) on the body trim. The stamped date code on my Muncie 4-speed transmission is "P0211" (Feb. 11, 1966, and "P" = Muncie) along with the stamped partial VIN (last 8 digits of my VIN tag).
