C1 steering box finish

Just finishing up steering box rebuild. Past forum post mention this should be natural(unpainted). Is this true? If so, What should I use to protect the metal?

I use a clear engine paint and then buff it with a fine Scotch pad to dull the finish. I use rusoleum but any brand should do. There are some other wipe on products, one called RPM,(http://www.ecsautomotive.com/rpm.php) but I have not used it so I can not say how well they work.

In reviewing the judging manual, I don't see that the box color is addressed. Could they be painted black either matte or semi and not get deductions? Any pics out there?

May also be painted semi-gloss black

The Corvette restoration handbook says that it could be either way. Mine is painted(1960) not sure if it was the blackout or that is the way they recieved it.

61-62 Judging Guide allows either painted or unpainted.
