If you hacksaw an original exhaust system you can see the seam between the two layers of pipe. This made the OEM exhaust last a fairly long time, reduced noise, and made the dealer replacement pipes twice as expensive as the pipes available at the auto parts store. You can tell OEM pipe from aftermarket pipe by its thickness. The OEM stuff is a lot thicker and heavier.

The drawing for 3863498 agrees: Welded or seamless steel tubing AISI C-1008 or C1010 2.5 +/- 0.100 inches laminated 2 pieces.
The outside distance between the two flattened surfaces is 0.93 -0.99 inches..

GM # 3849865 and 3849866 (listed as "3849865-66") are listed in the 1965 Corvette AIM (UPC 8, sheet A2) as well as in my 1964 & 1965 Chevrolet Parts Catalogs (Oct. 1963 & Oct. 1964). I rechecked the stamping on the pipe and it is "3849868". I believe that you might be correct thinking that the part number is for the pipe less the flange or it could be a mistake by the manufacturer.

      Dave,

I don't find GM 3849868 in any of the parts books, but it is called out in the 1966 AIM (UPC 8-A2, item 4, Pipe Asm Front Exhaust, RH). The Revision Record shows that it WAS GM 3877209, 3877210 until AIM date 7-13-65, at which point the front exhaust pipes changed to GM 3849867-68.

GM 3849867-68 is shown in the 1967 AIM on the same page (UPC 8-A2), in the Revision Record, AIM date change of 1-9-67, when it was changed BACK to GM 3877209-10, which was also the Service p/n in the '67 P&A.

For fun, the 1965 AIM page (UPC 8-A2) shows GM 3849865-66, with a Revision Record note that it WAS 3849865-66 until 1-19-65, when it became... GM 3849865-66 ...no change to the p/n, just the Revision Record guy's way of checking to see if anyone's paying attention, I guess

        Scott,

I never thought to look in my 1966 AIM. Years ago when I bought the pipes at a swap meet I believe that I determined that the shields were for 1963-1965 Corvettes. I still have the pipes (2" dia.) as well as the shields. When I get a chance I will re-examine the shields.
