    Re: '68 Convertible top

There is no difference in the vinyl top itself. The only "difference" would be the date code in the rear window. I don't have access at this moment to my manuals, so I cannot decipher the P20 code you posted. Is your 69 top an original GM top? An aftermarket reproduction top (Al Knoch) ?

According to the NCRS TIM the the front securing levers are chrome until late 1968 when they begin appearing with black plastic covering. the adjusting nuts are also difference. The question when did the plastic coating first appear.

P20 on the trim tag of your 1969 = November 20, 1969. There is a chart in the Judging Manual (Page 1 of the Third Edition) with the trim tag build dates for 1968 & 1969.

I guess itmake sense if you have the third edition which I do, is to read it from coverto cover. Currently I go to sections that have information on specific issue. It looks like I need to set down and go from page to page.

It is always a challenge for the authors to decide where to put the information. In the case of the TIM&JG we put it where it s most useful on the judging field. Unfortunately, as in this case, that doesn't always translate to the most useful in the garage. After working with it for a few years you will get the hang of it.

How much of the old top assembly do you have? Do you have just the old fabric and nothing else? If you have the complete assembly and the fabric is trashed, all questions regarding the rest of it should be answered. As far as any difference in components of the assembly, all the parts off the 1968 can be transferred to the 1969 assembly.

                Joe,
The old top that came with the car was missing all latches it was rusted across the front panel and above where the top of the glass touches. Their was no fabric attached, but came with new fabric.

The top that I recently purchased is in good shape with original fabric that has two small holes and a small split areas. The purchase include a complete car needing major work I bought the car just for the top with the intention of parting out all the unused parts that I can not use on current project 427/435 4 speed.

Thanks for the feedback on the difference on the 68/69 top. My car was built on 2/26/68 should the handles be chrome or with black plastic coating?

With the February build date I would expect to see chrome handles on the interior of the top and acorn nuts for the adjusting bolts that clamp to the header.
