    Styrofoam Blocks--'69 Coupe

    Hi--

In a previous post, some members reported they found styrofoam blocks in the back corners and under the carpet of their early C-3 Coupes. I have noticed the same thing with regard to my '69 Coupe. Question: What is the purpose of these two (2) styrofoam blocks???

Thanks in advance for your response(s).

Rob, if I had my say it would be to keep the carpet from failing into the cornors over time, more or less to keep the carpet upright. It doesn't appear to have any other inpact.

        Hi Rob,
The blocks are called out in the AIM as 'spacer'; with a RH and LH, and a part # on each.
The view A detail drawing seems to indicate they were there to support the bulkhead and wheel housing carpet pieces where the fiberglass buklhead/ underbody has a recessed area.
My originals have a very little bit of glue on them as though the carpet was, or was intended to be, glued to the spacers.
I do remember that when I took the carpet out the spacers were loose from it.
        Regards,
        Alan

Thank you very much Alan! I had intended to order new carpet this coming week, sothis information is not only timely, but very pertinent! One last question, is the AIM the same as the Assembly Manual??

Perfect, "thank you as well Keith!" As a member in a previous post mentioned with regard to his research, I will also attempt to do a more diligent and thorough job of reviewing my Assembly Manual prior to asking questions on the Technical Forum! I truly appreciate you taking the time to respond to my question.

                Hi Rob,
I mention the AIM only because it seems to help explain the 'spacer's' use.
I often refer to it if for no other reason to see what a particular part is called.
Not in the AIM but.... I believe that what for many, many, years I called the 'block', is actually the 'cylinder case'.
                Regards,
                Alan

                  Hi Alan--

I learned something else new from you--I had no idea that the engine block was properly referred to as a cylinder case.
I have two more questions if you do not mind: 1). I looked through my Assembly Manual several times yesterday, and could not find the page that showed the styrofoam blocks. Would you mind directing me to the section/page? (I felt it probably should be in Section B, but looked through the entire Manual); and, 2). Where exactly is the glue applied, and how much when the carpet is installed? Thank you in advance for your response/answers to my new questions.

                    Hi Rob,
The spacers are shown as '5, Spacer' in UPC 1, Sheet F31, in the 71 AIM that I use. The sheet is titled "REAR CARPETS & INSULATORS".
I'd look in that area in your 69 AIM.
There was 'swath' of yellowed glue diagonally across the face of the spacer that face the carpet. It was about 1/2" wide and 6" long. I've only looked at 3 spacers, so don't know how typical the glue or it's amount was.
                    Regards,
                    Alan

Thanks very much for your help Alan!! I will check the Assembly Manual tonight in the section that you referenced! I also appreciate the "gouge" with regard to the glue on the styrofoam block--I have not removed the carpet yet, however, since it is falling down in both corners revealing the blocks, I should be able to see if there is glue residue on the blocks. Hope you have a great day, and a great week!
                      Best Regards,
                      Rob
