    64 Horn Contact

When I applied power to my new wiring harness the horn sounded immediately and continuously. I removed the horn cap from the steering column and after some additional disassembly I discovered that the horn contact was missing and the black wire pinched and shorted. Now I have a new contact but I don't know which way to install it. From the bottom of the hub upwards with the shoulder of the plastic part of the contact toward the engine compartment, or inserted from the top?

    Thanks-Doug

      Re: 64 Horn Contact

      Hi David,
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I found information tonight telling me the opposite. When I look for info in the AIM it seems to be in the shop manuual and vice versa. I found a diagram in the '64 manual, section 12-3. It shows the contact being inserted into the Cancelling Cam from below with the shoulder of the plastic housing of the contact toward the firewall. That is opposite of how I installed it, and with it installed the way you say the horn doesn't work. After finding the drawing I pulled the hub and shaft and tried inserting the contact from below as shown in the diagram. It doesn't fit. The hole through the Cam is on the inner circumfrence of the Cam and the plastic shoulder causes the contact to go through at an angle and fail to seat. If I reverse it the way you describe the shoulder fits in the recessed hole in the hub. I have another thread started and will go back to it and describe what I'm finding. Maybe the problem is elsewhere but I still need to install the contact.
