    NOS 66 Hub cap question

looked at a real nice 66 L68 convertible project car today and it was started to be restored or fixed up in the early 80's. then the project stopped. but with the car came a lot of NOS parts. one of them is a set of hub caps in the original box. and in that box was what looked to be a Iwin flat screw driver liked used in 67 for the bolt on wheels. did the screw driver come with hub caps

Did any body ever buy a set over the counter?

      Keith,

I have a set of NOS '66 hubcaps and they didn't come with any type of screwdriver. There's no reason for GM to have included a screwdriver.

Okay thanks. this car had a bunch of NOS parts that came with it. all four hub caps were in one box, and there was a bag of valve stem adapters to make them longer?, and the screw driver.

One GM box? I would fully expect a hubcap to be "one per box". That was true for 1967 caps.

I have a friend who bought some many years ago, and he got the caps with "safe non-spinner replacement" trim attached. No screwdrivers, and no valve stem extensions.

Yes one big box that had GM accessories logo printed on the box. Should have looked for a part number

Sold two sets on E-bay about a year ago. Individual boxes, no spinners and no screwdriver.

In 1965 I had a new Corvette with wheel covers. As you know they are not sturdiest wheel covers created. So when the 66's came out with a more heavy duty wheel cover I promptly ordered a set over the counter. As mentioned above they did not have a knockoff style spinner as our government feared they would be a danger to a pedestrian crossing the street etc. Maybe my time frame is off on that statement. Maybe the lack of spinners on NOS 66 covers did not occur until later on in years. I can't remember the exact details. Meanwhile I have owned my share of NOS covers and never saw a set with a screwdriver. JD

The 1966 Corvette wheel cover was sold under GM part # 3888813 and described as "COVER, w/ornament". About 30 years ago I bought a NOS 3888813 cover in the GM box at a swap meet and it has the spinner and spacer attached to the cover. GM # 3888813 was replaced with GM # 3964518 in October 1974 as per GM Parts History. In the early 1980's I bought a total of 8 GM # 3964518 wheel covers from Dobles Chevrolet in Manchester, NH. The 3964518 cover did not have the spinner but rather a replacement cap (maybe about 3" in dia.). I believe that the screws were different as well.

In 1988 when my wife bought a new 1988 GMC Safari van the 4 trim rings were in the back of the van. Each ring was sealed in plastic but in one large box.
