    C2 alternator laminations

I have a 66 small block with a 1100750 alternator (C60). The laminations that separate the 2 halves are orange in color. I have always assumed this to be incorrect as I have not seen any with this color. The 4th ed TIM & JG says they should be clear to dark caramel laminations.

I am watching Mecum Kissimmee and there was a benchmark 65 396 go thru and the camera shot of the engine showed the alternator with orange laminations. Is orange accepted as correct?

Remember Benchmark you have to only have about 50% original

      Randy,

The stator ribs/laminations were originall painted black when new.

I have a untouched 628 alternator from a 63 that I slightly seperated the halves to inspect and I can report the stator is black in the center area but wore off in the visable external area.

Thanks Tim. I think all stators for 63-67 (and possibly 68?) had the stator center bands painted black. There have been several discussions on this topic here over the years and there are several interesting discussions in the archives. I haven't figured out how to get there yet though)

Below left is a pic of an NOS 65 alt stator that Wayne Midkiff posted a few years ago that shows just how the center plates were painted black.
On the right is an unrestored 67 alternator.

            Thanks guys,

Since the alternator has the correct date code I assume it may have been rebuilt some time ago and the rebuilder used some sort of paint or insulating material on the laminations. The orange windings on the Mecum car gave me reason to wonder.

Having spent my entire 38-year automotive career in Manufacturing and Manufacturing Engineering, I'm pretty familiar with how most things were made, but I never saw how the innards of alternators (rotors and stators) were made, specifically how they were wound with heavy wire at 25,000+ units per day. I never visited the huge Delco-Remy alternator plant in Anderson, Indiana, but at the time it was said to be the most fully-automated plant in GM - steel, aluminum ingots and copper in one end, and alternators out the other end. Would LOVE to know how they wound those things at that volume.
