    69 gas cap door question

I have a 69 July 18, build car. The gas cap door when opened has a friction type mechanism that holds it open. In the judging manual it is not suppose to be there. I was wondering if there was a mid year change to a friction holder to hold it open. The unit looked original before I had it re-plated. When was friction holder first used.? Joe

You are right saying the old JM is incorrect. The new '68/'69 JM will be out later in 2012 correcting this mistake. There was a friction type band/spring to hold the lid up starting with the '68 model year.

I don't understand what you mean by a "friction type mechanism". ALL 1969 Corvettes originally had a gas door bezel with a "riveted" spring clip on the underside of the hinge extension. When the door was fully opened, the hinge snapped into the spring clip holding the door open. The door had to be pulled with some force to disengage it from the spring clip. The clip often broke off from the bezel's integral "rivets".

          Terry,

Thanks for the reply, thats great news that the TB is being corrected. I will be glad to have another point. Every little bit helps.

Joe, technical you are correct, but as you pointed out the spring clip provides friction that holds it place. Thanks for the info on the door. I will take it easy with the door.

I would not describe the mechanism involved here as friction-based. The clip simply provides a mechanically-based retention of the hinge.
