I bought two of service (base only) part number 6422188. This was in the 70s. I should have unpacked the first one for a better look, as I later found 2 or 3 rubber plugs filling holes that are not in the OEM version. These were AC Spark's invention (with Chevrolet's direction or approval) for making a base that could be made in 3 or 4 different configurations. I'm just saying - take a close look before you buy!

" I bought the big block base under the part number 6485239 " This is a small part of a long discussion about 1970 Corvette air cleaners. I found it by searching for the service number I mentioned above - 6422188.

There are other archival mentions of the number 6422188, and probably other mentions of the assembly number also.

GM #6423907 was the actual air cleaner used in PRODUCTION for later 1967 Corvettes with L-36. Earlier 1967 used GM #6423240. I do not know what the difference was nor do I know just when the change occurred but it was probably no later than about September, 1966.

So, if one finds an NOS GM #6423907 will it be identical to the ones originally installed on 1967 Corvettes? Well, that depends on when it was manufactured. The 6423907 was manufactured from 1966 until just several years ago. You can expect that changes occurred over that time----none that should affect functionality but some that likely affect at least nuances of original configuration.

The 6423240 air cleaner assembly was also used on the 1966 Corvette 427 w/L72 as per the 1966 AIM. I believe the only difference between the 6423240 air cleaner assembly and the 6423907 air cleaner assembly is that the base on the 6423240 air cleaner assembly has one less indentation. Apparently the 1967 needed an additional indentation for clearance purposes. The change from the 6423240 to the 6423907 air cleaner assembly took place on 7-7-66 as per the 1967 AIM but who really knows when the actual change took place on the assembly line. If you look in Noland Adam's 1963-1967 restoration book on page 352 (bottom of page on right) you will see a photo of an original 1966 427 L36 air cleaner base. Just below the tube there is no indentation.

Enclosed is a photo of an original 6422188 base (part of the 6423907 air cleaner assembly) that I removed from a 1969 Corvette 350 engine w/SHP back in 1980. I repainted the base back in the early 1980's. When installed on the engine the tube points directly toward the valve cover.
