    69 427/390 and GF432 Fuel Filter

One of the last things on my to do list before judging arrived in the mail yesterday...a NOS gf-432 fuel filter.

I just brought it out into the garage and was about to start swapping my old one out when I realized that the printing on the silkscreen faces in towards the engine block, not out towards the fan.

I know that the gf432 I bought is original and not a newer replacement. It has the same color and finish as the original one on the car now. After closer inspection, I see the remnants of the original red silkscreen on the inside of the one already installed on the car. I cannot see any of the numbers on my original...only like 10 percent of the silkscreen remains.

Why would the original gf432 have silkscreening that faces the engine block and the replacements in the catalogs (ecklers, paragon, etc) have it on the opposite forward facing edge where it is visible?

You don't suppose the people making the replacement are proud of that silk screen and want it seen?

Out of curiosity, how many points would be lost if I just left the original perfectly functioning filter on the car that doesnt have the part number from the silkscreen visible?

I guess I should have thought about this before buying a NOS replacement...it just looks so nice in its 40 year old delco box.

The original GF-432 on my 1969 small block had silk-screening that could easily be seen, more-or-less on the front side of the filter canister. The 1969 small block used the same fuel filter mounting configuration as L-36 so I would expect no difference as a result of engine differences.

My guess? I doubt that the silk screen was carefully and consistently placed on any of the filter canisters. It was there simply to identify the filter and not create a placement "standard" for later restorers or serve as any sort of a "decorative feature".

          Gary,
I have judged a lot of 1969-69 engine compartments and I have never deducted for the placement of the silk screen on the filter. I have deducted for the lack of the silk screen, but that was not your question. I can not assure you that everyone who might judge your engine compartment will take the same point of view, but I would hope they would. I think you are trying to meet a standard that does not exist.
