    Tank /Build Sheet

My friend told me today he was replacing the fuel filler neck on his '69.
He's owned the car more than 10 years.
It's driver condition, he will probably never have it Flight judged .

He was excited to see with a flash light ,what appears to be the "Tank Sticker" .

He asked if it's worth the trouble to drop the tank to preserve the "Sticker ".

    What are your thoughts ??

    Hi Dana,

Yes, in my opinion, it would certainly be worth the trouble to save the tank sticker. The best way to perserve the sticker is to drop the tank but some have been able to maneuver getting it out with out dropping the tank. That might take longer than dropping the tank to do it with out damaging the tank sticker.

I wish mine had been saved sometime in its' earlier life.

It's good to hear from you. I hope to see you at a Corvette outing soon.

Dana - my advice would be to take it a step further.........drop the tank and 'preserve' both the tank and sticker.....ie don't remove the sticker from the tank......this, in my mind, is the ultimate 'proof' of document originality. And chances are that the original tank is probably not far from having to be replaced anyhow.....new tanks are relatively cheap at around $200. The process of removing/replacing the tank is very straight forward and only takes a few hours.

I would do it as described above by replacing the tank and documenting the replacement with photos. Unless, of course the car no longer matches the tank sheet!

Corvette order sheets can sometimes be found behind the speedometer (my 70's sheet location) and even behind the radio (my 68's sheet location) in addition to the glued on tank location. My 68's location was actually behind the ductwork behind the radio.

Absolutely, preserve the tank sticker, and see if it will come off easily. If it tears, make sure to take a photo, close up hi-res, of the remaining piece or pieces so the jig saw puzzle is clear for future owners.

Don't take it off just replace the tank. Someone distroyed mine by taking it off with the gas tank still installed. Now its lost and gone forever.

Do not try to remove the tank sticker with the fuel tank still in the car. You'll most likely destroy it. Drop the tank and replace.

The glue on my tank sticker covered just about the entire sticker, if I had tried to remove with fuel tank in car it would have ripped.

I wouldn't remove it with the tank installed but once it's out it's easy with a good razor blade. When you cut it off don't worry about scratching the tank. In fact you want to cut deep into the glue so that all cutting is on the tank side of the glue. When you are done you should even have some of the zinc plating from the tank on the back side of the glue like when I removed mine.
