    C2 Steel Wheel Identification?

I'm looking at a local ad for (4) Steel Wheels and not sure what to make of them?

The ad reads: (4) Original Corvette Steel Wheels 15 X 5 1/2 with a date code of k 1 5 #07244793 in excellemt condition, one of the wheels still has the original GM sticker on the inner section.

He supplied a close up picture of the GM sticker but it's very worn out and almost impossible to read accurately; however, from what I THINK it MAY read is: GM JAY CN 2137 15 th (the rest of the sticker is gone) --- believe me, this is a very rough guess ????

I would be much obliged with any ideas before I call this guy?

    Thank you,
    Ralph

Ralph - If the date code is by the valve stem, it is a later production wheel. All C2 wheels (63-67 production) had the date codes stamped in the inside of the wheel so if you wanted to know the production date code, you had to remove the tire. Having said that if the price is right and you need the wheels, it's your call; but as noted they would not be "original" production wheels. Pete

63 & 64 wheels have a different shape than other midyears. Some 63s are body color, but most 63s and all 64s I believe were gloss black. What year are you looking for?

        Mel,

I'm looking for 66 wheels ------ the picture of the wheels in ad are black but he did not specify what year they are oroiginal to.

The fact that these are stamped K and not JK leads me to belive they could be from a 63-64 which I assume may not even fit over 66 disk brakes?

As I mentioned, I'm just trying to get as much infromation as possible before I make a mistake

        Thank you,
        Ralph

          Ralph,

Look in the archives for pictures of correct corvette mid year wheels so you get a idea what is correct. Look seriously at any 5 1/2" wheels as they are not easy to locate, take a picture and post if you can, we can probably tell you exactly what they are and give a fair estimate of worth.

Stamping but the valve stem indicates a later service replacement but that does not mean it's not exactly the same as a 66 wheel because Kelsey made these wheels for a number of years. I have a set on my 63 that are 65-66 wheels that are riveted but everyone says production line originals are all welded so these must be service wheels. They even have GM stamped on the raised spider by the lug nut and no stamping at the valve stem so I guess they are stamped inside like the originals. ??? My point is that your wheels may be nice service replacements for 65-66 and for a fair price a good purchase for you.

              Ralph -

Regardless of the configuration of the mystery wheels, they're not original to any midyear; the K-1-5 date stamp says they were manufactured in 1975, so they're some sort of later service replacement wheel.

                Re: C2 Steel Wheel Identification?

As John stated the wheels were made in 1975 (K-1-5 stamping) and if they are stamped 15 X 5 1/2 K they are probably GM # 3838080 wheels. I believe the 3838080 wheel was original equipment on 1966 Chevrolet Police cars. The 3838080 wheel is also a replacement for the 1958-1962 Corvette wheel (GM # 3748348) and the 1963-1964 Corvette wheels (GM # 3825686 & 3834127) as per Chevrolet Parts History.

                3825686 --- 1/63 MIX with 3834127 --- 10/63 USE 3839814
                3748348 --- 8/65. USE 3839814 --- 5/66 USE 3838080

                Original 1965-1966 Corvette wheels (15 X 5 1/2 JK) were GM # 3869156.
