    Lyndon,

The majority of choke covers I have seen are hand written in a two letter code. Later production have the code ink stamped on the cover. Thanks.

The original hand written ones I have seen look like a black Sharpie. I would add that the ink stamps seem to be more common on 1972 and newer cars.

BTW: Lyndon, most all the questions you have asked in the last several days are answered in the TIM&JG. Break down and get a current version it will tell you things you haven't yet begun to think about. Don't fret there will still be plenty of questions to ask, but at least they will lead us to upgrades for the current manual rather than plowing old ground.

Oh, don't misunderstand me. We are a long ways from covering everything, but we would like to think we have covered a lot. I am not sure how far back the second edition was (I would have to go look at my collection of old manuals, and drafts of manuals to tell, and it is too cold in the garage to do that), but we had a MAJOR revision of the 1970-72 TIM&JG in 1993. If the one you have is before that, you are sure missing a lot.

We also know that despite our best efforts the words we use sometimes just don't get our ideas across, and the questions and comments on this board help us to work toward clarifying parts of what we have written. Of course that only works if everyone is using the most recent version of the manual. Also we sometimes find very illustrative photos posted on the board and we will then seek higher resolution images to further illustrate the manual. There is more going on behind the scenes with the manuals than most are aware of. We are always trying to make them better.

              Lyndon,

Like Terry said, a black sharpie of some sort, but I believe it is a medium type of point.

Re: Choke coil cover inspection marks

Fourth Edition TIM&JG (page 62) describes the broadcast code issue as follows:

"...A number of original cars have been seen with a broadcast code hand written on the choke stove cover, fewer use an ink stamp. Do not deduct for lack thereof."

My engine showed no such markings, and because the JG says not to deduct (and this was reinforced to me as I prepared for judging), I didn't spend any time on it. If I understand the JG correctly (as highlighted by the "*" notation), the 1972 base engine has been seen with both hand written and stamped codes. All others that had codes are expected to be seen with hand written codes only. This is my interpretation of the manual. If wrong, I'd appreciate clarification.

Now that this thread comes up, I find myself interested and wonder if there are any photos of hand written and/or stamped broadcast codes for us to see. Anyone?

                Thanks.

I just got dinged a point for the missing braodcast code on my 72 LT1. When I missed Top FLight by .3 pts, I could have used every extra point I could get.
