62 hardtop rivets that go through rear glass question.

I am making progress on the assembly of my 62 hardtop and just finished the tedious task of installing the new window gasket, glass and stainless trim that goes over the gasket.

My next step is to install the 4 rivets (2 per side) that go through the retaining plate then the glass and then through mounting bracket.

If I look at the mounting bracket that is attached to the lower frame, on one side there is a small (approx 1/8") space between the glass and the bracket surface. The other side is much closer. I do not see anything that is holding it away except for the thickness of teh window gasket.

    My question are:
1 Should I expect a small gap at this point?
    2. When I install the rivet, should it pull everything together properly? I am using one of the Glassworks windows and just do not want to crack the glass.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks again,

    Tony

I just checked the brackets on my '62 hardtop. The D/S bracket is tight against the glass. The P/S bracket has a .060" gap between the bracket and the glass but it is tight with no play (movement). Since you're using a Glassworks window I would call them. I'm sure they have done a lot of window/ bracket replacement and could give you the best advice.

      Hi Enrich,

Thanks for the info. I did talk with the Glassworks folks today and that space is common. (By the say, I have had a few questions during this restoration and they have always been very helpful) They just said to use a C clamp, block of wood and a cloth as a pad to pull the assembly together then rivet it. It should not crack.

They also stressed to use a plastic drill bit versus a standard wood bit so the hole on both sides of the glass is nice and clean.
